Colorado girl hospitalized in I-25 rollover at St. Francis Drive
Apr. 4—A 16-year-old Colorado girl suffered serious injuries, including a spinal fracture, in a single-vehicle rollover late Monday night on Interstate 25, police said.
Santa Fe police Lt. Jose Gonzales said three people were headed to Albuquerque to visit a relative when the driver apparently became confused and tried to take the St. Francis Drive offramp at about 9:30 p.m.
"When she realized her mistake — looked like she overcorrected and sent the vehicle into a roll down that embankment near that ... offramp," Gonzales said.
He added, officers shut down a portion of the interstate for about two hours.
The crash left the girl with a spinal fracture, broken ribs, a humerus bone fracture, and two punctured lungs, Gonzales said. She was airlifted to University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque for emergency surgery, though her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, Gonzales said.
The other passenger in the vehicle, a 24-year-old woman, suffered a fractured rib and was taken to an area hospital. The woman driver is not believed to have suffered serious injuries, Gonzales said.
Gonzales did not identify the occupants of the vehicle, but said he believes they are related.
