Police in Glendale, Colorado, are investigating Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant after he posted a video Saturday morning on Instagram Live in which he appears to be holding a handgun.

Lt. Jamie Dillon, a spokesperson for the Glendale Police Department, told The Commercial Appeal on Monday that the investigation stems from whether Morant committed a crime regarding the prohibited use of a weapon, which includes possession of a firearm while intoxicated.

First-time offenders of the statute typically are charged with a misdemeanor and can be fined up to $1,000, according to Colorado Legal Defense Group.

Dillon said the investigation began after it was made aware of the video. Dillon also confirmed the incident happened in a nightclub in Glendale, a small enclave near Denver.

The NBA is also conducting its own investigation into Morant's actions, which occurred after the Grizzlies' loss to the Denver Nuggets on Friday.

According to the league's collective bargaining agreement, players are not allowed to possess firearms or similar deadly weapons when "traveling on any NBA-related business, whether on behalf of the player's Team, the NBA or any League-related entity."

The Grizzlies announced that Morant would be away from the team through at least Tuesday's game at the Los Angeles Lakers. On Sunday, coach Taylor Jenkins said there's no definitive timetable for Morant to return.

"He understands that he's made some difficult decisions and poor choices in the past that he's got to account for," Jenkins said. "And that's why you see in the statement, that speaks for itself, that he understands he's got to get help to get into a better place not just for himself, but also for his team."
