Colts’ 2021 training camp preview: WR Ashton Dulin

The Indianapolis Colts wrapped up their spring workouts at the end of May and will return for training camp sometime at the end of July to prepare for the 2021 regular season.

Before that happens, we will be going through the majority of the roster to preview their background, projected role and bottom line with the team entering training camp.

Here are the wide receivers we have previewed thus far entering the summer:

Now, it’s time to take a look at a core special teamer.

Name: Ashton Dulin Position: WR Height: 6-foot-1 Weight: 215 pounds Age: 24 College: Malone Free Agent Year: 2022

Dulin signed with the Colts as an undrafted free agent following the 2019 draft. He appeared in 13 games during his rookie season playing on a handful of the offensive snaps, but he made an impact on special teams. That helped his case for 2020 when he found himself in the same role. Dulin played just 10% of the offensive snaps but was a key player on special teams with 50% of the snaps logged.

Expected Role

The top four spots in the wide receiver room are locked in, and Dulin may be a favorite for the WR5 role because of his work on special teams. He may not be the fifth wide receiver when it comes to targets has he's had just eight total in two seasons, but Dulin's spot is safer than any wide receiver outside of the top four on the depth chart.

2021 Outlook

Dulin likely won't make much of an impact as a wideout unless some serious injuries hit the room. His impact will come on special teams where he works as a lead blocker on returns and as a gunner in punt coverage. Zach Hicks of Sports Illustrated had a phenomenal breakdown of what Dulin brings to special teams.

Bottom Line

Dulin isn't a household name. He won't be leading the wide receiver room in any category except for special teams snaps. That's okay. His role on special teams as a blocker and a gunner is vital. He has the best chance outside of the top four to make the roster and even though he may not see many snaps on offense, his impact will be felt on special teams.
