Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz is seemingly progressing well in his rehab from foot surgery because the 28-year-old is apparently pushing the envelope to return soon.

Head coach Frank Reich told reporters Wednesday that Wentz has been wanting to push it further in rehab but that the team has to hold him back a bit in order to not suffer a setback.

“Yeah, 100 percent. He’s getting very antsy, very antsy,” Reich told the media Wednesday. “He’s wanting to push the envelope, as I would expect but he’s got to be patient and just stay focused on the mental side of it right now and we have to let things take their course, but at the same time, there’s a time to push things and we’ll keep doing that as it’s appropriate.”

The Colts got some encouraging performances from their young quarterbacks in Jacob Eason and Sam Ehlinger. There is still a long way to go for those two, but their debuts were strong enough to keep the Colts from thinking they have to bring another passer in.

In a perfect world, Reich is hoping the team will know who the Week 1 starter is under center by the time the final preseason game rolls around.

“Actually, Kevin (Bowen) asked me that question yesterday on the radio show and it’s a very relevant question. What I said to him as I think is very true even after I’ve thought about when we talked about it was that in the perfect world, we have a really good idea after that third preseason game and Carson (Wentz) would get to work two weeks going into the first game. That’s the perfect world,” said Reich.

This is still a situation to monitor as the Colts look to prepare for the remaining two preseason games, but it’s at least a bit encouraging that Wentz is wanting to push the envelope, which should suggest his return will be sooner rather than later.
