Colts cruise to victory on Senior Day

Apr. 21—HENDERSON — Senior Day is designed to honor and celebrate those who are wrapping up their career and participating in their last home game. While the game itself often is and rightfully should be overshadowed, Crossroads Christian baseball made sure seniors Sam Boyd and Zachary Bartholomew ended their career in Henderson in style.

The Colts defeated conference foe Cresset Christian, 24-4, on their home field to improve to 3-1 in conference play and 5-7 overall. They scored multiple runs in each inning to earn the mercy rule victory and the season sweep over the Eagles.

Cresset Christian struck first in the top half of the first, scratching across two runs to take an early lead.

Crossroads would waste no time in answering the call, stepping up to the plate both figuratively and literally, scoring eight runs in the opening frame. Their offense would stay hot with seven runs in the second and nine over the final two innings to secure a dominating victory.

Most impressive was their balanced attack in the box, as 12 different Colts recorded a base hit in the contest. Four Crossroads batters tallied a game-high two hits in the win, while sophomore Danny Wieninger recorded a two-run home run, his first of the season.

On a day dedicated to him, Bartholomew delivered at the plate, driving in a game-high three runs to tie his season-high. Freshman Jackson Anderson also brought three runs in to score, while amassing two hits.

Senior Sam Boyd also turned in an impressive performance, driving in one run via his first triple and base hit of the season.

As a team, the Colts hit .500 on the afternoon and were aided by five stolen bases and seven base-on-balls.

Boyd and Bartholomew were two of a quartet of Crossroads pitchers to silence the Eagles' bats, as the Colts allowed just three hits while striking out nine batters.

With the victory, they improved to 3-1 in conference play, giving them a chance to earn a share of the Mid-Carolina Conference title. On Friday, they returned to action against Cape Fear Christian Academy (9-1), who sits at 5-0 in league play.

A win for Crossroads would put them one game away from a conference title, as they look to bounce back from their early season loss to the Eagles.
