INDIANAPOLIS -- The Colts came into the draft light on cornerbacks and are doing something about it.

Indianapolis selected South Carolina cornerback Darius Rush with the No. 138 pick in the fifth round.

At 6-foot-1 and 198 pounds and with 33 3/8-inch arms, his profile fits what the Colts look for in cornerbacks for defensive coordinator Gus Bradley's Seattle-style Cover-3 scheme, which emphasizes press-man coverage and physicality at the line of scrimmage. They also took 6-3 Kansas State's JuJu Brents in the second round.

Rush started 21 games over the past two seasons, notching three interceptions and 15 pass breakups, playing in the Southeastern Conference. He went up against Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson as well as No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young.

Like every other Colts draft pick so far, Rush is a high-level athlete. His 4.36-second 40-yard dash ranks in the top 4% of all cornerback prospects since 1987, and his 6-1 height also ranks in the top 4%.

The Colts had a cornerback need after trading Pro Bowler Stephon Gilmore to the Cowboys for a fifth-round pick and allowing Brandon Facyson to walk to the Raiders in free agency. They still have Pro Bowler Kenny Moore II in the nickel and Isaiah Rodgers Sr. on the outside, but both are entering contract years.

Rush will likely battle for a rotational spot behind Rodgers Sr. and Brents on the outside, but he could get first-team reps in the spring while Brents recovers from a wrist injury.
