Colts look at BYU quarterback Jaren Hall ahead of 2023 NFL Draft

The Indianapolis Colts are scouring the nation for quarterbacks as they get ready for the 2023 NFL Draft. They have the No. 4 overall pick and are in need of a QB in the wake of swapping out veterans for several years.

Their latest stop centered on Jaren Hall of Brigham Young. Here's what you should know about him.

Insider: 10 thoughts on Richardson, Levis, Jackson and the QB search

Jaren Hall age

Hall is 25 years old, which is more common for BYU players. They often go on a Mormon mission for two years, delaying their athletic careers.

“For two years, I stepped away from school, from sports, stepped away from all my social life and my friends and just completely left. I went to northern California up in the Roseville area so I didn’t go overseas like a lot of people did, but I was called to serve there," Hall said to pff.com.

“Every day, you wake up at six o’clock in the morning, you workout and you kind of study and get ready for the day and you just hit the street and talk to every person you can just about how we can serve and become better people, make this world a better place through Jesus Christ and hit the values he teaches us. … You could cut somebody’s grass, you could pull weeds, you could serve at a homeless shelter, serving food. Any opportunity to serve and do good, we were there whether we were in our white shirts and our dress pants or dressed out in clothes to serve in street clothes, we’d do it.

“So, for two years, that’s all I did. And then following that, just jumped right back into life as if I never left. It was a pretty blessed two years for me: learned a lot, grew up a lot, man. When you don’t have your parents' credit card and you don’t have all their direction every day, you gotta kind of buck up, age up and make your own decisions every day. So, this is the best thing that could’ve happened to me honestly and I think it’s helped me in football and in a lot of ways mentally to overcome challenges and trials.”

Jaren Hall stats at BYU

He started the last two seasons for the Cougars, passing for 6,174 career yards, 52 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He also rushed for 800 yards and 9 touchdowns.

Jaren Hall NFL Draft profile

Walter Football ranks him 9th among draft-eligible QBs, and a likely third-day pick.

"Hall has an average arm with mobility, athleticism, and accurate passing. However, he could stand to work on ball placement to lead his receivers for more yardage after the catch. Team sources said they were disappointed in his 2022 tape, and he did not help himself at the Senior Bowl or at the combine. They view him as a backup with some upside."

Here's NFL.com's assessment: "An undersized pocket quarterback with unimpressive arm strength, Hall’s field command gives him a shot to make it at the next level. He throws with excellent ball placement to targets on the move and delivers a feathery soft deep ball with accuracy. His lack of drive velocity creates smaller margins for error and his timing needs to be impeccable to beat NFL man coverage. Hall operates with ideal poise from the pocket. He does an adequate job of reading coverages and getting rid of the ball without taking sacks. The size and arm strength will concern some teams, but offenses operating out of heavy play-action with levels-based route concepts could target him as a solid future backup."
