Apr. 7—Two teams with championship pedigrees met Monday when 2019 2A state champion West Stanly visited 2019 4A state champion South Caldwell.
When all was said and done, the Colts took a 4-3 win and handed the Spartans their first loss of the season.
West Stanly (6-0, 5-0 Rocky River 2A) tore through its first five games of the season, allowing only three runs — all of which game in a 13-3 win over Montgomery Central on March 22. South Caldwell has been just as dominant, outscoring its opponents 64-7 in its first five games.
The Spartans got on the board first in the bottom of the second, but the Colts quickly responded with three runs in the top of the third and added another in the top of the fifth before South Caldwell (5-1, 5-0 Northwestern 3A/4A) tried to spark a rally in the bottom of the seventh. The Spartans scored one run, but the Colts were able to shut them down and snare the win.
Kadie Becker had a home run and a double to go along with two runs batted in, and Regan Weisner had two hits and scored a run for South Caldwell. Kaylee Anderson, Jasmine Hall and Kenley Jackson had one hit each for the Spartans, and Addison Blair scored a run.
Becker took the loss in the circle. She pitched all seven innings, allowing eight hits and four runs, all earned, while walking one and striking out three.
Shelby Barbee led West Stanly with two home runs in three plate appearances. She finished with three RBI and two runs scored.
The Spartans host Hickory at 5 p.m., today. South Caldwell won the first meeting between the two teams 11-0 on March 15.
