Colts place Kenny Moore II on injured reserve

INDIANAPOLIS - Kenny Moore II's season has finally come to a close.

After sitting out the past four games with an ankle injury, the Colts' Pro Bowl nickel cornerback is headed to injured reserve, ending his season with one game to play.

The Colts signed defensive end Rashod Berry off the Jaguars practice squad to take Moore's roster spot for Sunday's season finale against the Texans. The Colts will play that game with many holes at cornerback, as Isaiah Rodgers Sr. went on injured reserve last week and Brandon Facyson is currently in the concussion protocol.

Moore II was out on the practice field in street clothes Wednesday, working through ladder drills and other stretches to try to test the ankle one more time. But the Colts determined that it was too much of a climb to get him ready by Sunday, considering he hasn't practiced in more than a month.

Moore II suffered the ankle injury in a loss to the Steelers and was on a scooter the next week. It's unclear why the Colts held off placing him on injured reserve, as he missed four games without practicing in addition to the bye week.

He has not had the season he hoped for coming off his first Pro Bowl campaign in 2021, when he tied for the team lead with four interceptions. Playing in a new scheme under Gus Bradley that emphasized the role of the nickel cornerback, Moore II made it through 12 games this season without recording an interception. His 65 tackles were his fewest since 2019, when he played 11 games.

What is Kenny Moore's salary?

Moore II will enter a contract year next spring. He asked for a reworked deal this past spring, but the Colts did not budge. He's due to make $6.8 million next year, but he could be cut without Indianapolis owing any more money.

Much is up in the air for Moore II and other players given that the Colts will need to hire a coach, which could result in a new defensive coaching staff.
