Columbia Basin Memorial Day observances
May 28—COLUMBIA BASIN — People around the Basin will gather to honor fallen servicemen and -women on Monday, as is traditional for Memorial Day.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion will hold a series of ceremonies with a color guard, a 21-gun salute and taps beginning at 10 a.m. at the Soap Lake cemetery. Ephrata will hold its ceremony at the cemetery at 11 a.m. and Quincy at 12:30 p.m.
The Forgotten Heroes Memorial Day Celebration will take place at 11 a.m. at the Grant County International Airport Triangle Park Veterans Memorial. The ceremonial bell will be rung and roses laid on the memorial in memory of the 87 servicemen who perished in the 1952 U.S. Air Force C-124A Globemaster crash, followed by the National Anthem, a 21-gun salute and taps. Chairs are limited and attendees are encouraged to bring their own.
Moses Lake's remembrance ceremony will be held at Pioneer Memorial Gardens at 3 p.m., according to cemetery sexton Susan Freeman. The time has been changed to accommodate the Forgotten Heroes Memorial. The public is invited to come out and join in on the ceremony to honor local men and women who have served and passed on.
Wherever residents of the Columbia Basin may be at 3 p.m on Monday, they can take place in the nationwide Moment of Remembrance that is a tradition associated with Memorial Day they may not be aware of. At that time, it is traditional for Americans to stop what they are doing and take a moment of silence to remember our fallen service members.
