Columbia firefighters rescue two pets from a house fire, department says

A family’s two pets were rescued from a house fire by Columbia firefighters Friday morning, the city’s fire department reported.

Columbia Fire Department responded at about 9 a.m. to the fire in northeast Columbia on Fallen Leaf Drive. That’s off Hard Scrabble Road in the Magnolia Hall neighborhood.

The fire was throughout the home when firefighters arrived and had caused extensive damage, the department said. The family had made it out of the house without being injured. Images of the damage showed the second story rear of the home and its roof destroyed by the fire.

While putting out the flames, firefighters rescued the family’s dog and a pet rabbit, the department’s spokesman Mike DeSumma said.

An initial investigation revealed that discarded smoking material caused the fire, the department said. No firefighters were hurt.

The fire was at least the sixth Midlands house fire in three weeks.

In the previous two weeks, three homes in Kershaw County caught fire. Wednesday, fires damaged homes in Sumter and Orangeburg, displacing a family of five and a family of eight.
