Columbia resident awarded music scholarship

Sep. 3—COVENTRY — Abigail Levine of Columbia has been selected as the 2022 recipient of the Annual Song- a- Day Music Scholarship.

The scholarship Levine was awarded was in the amount of $250.

Since 2002, the Songa- Day Music Fund has awarded an annual scholarship to an area graduating senior in high school who plans to further their education in music. The Song- a- Day Music Fund is operated by the Song- a-Day Music Center, which is located at 2809 Boston Turnpike in Coventry.

" The fund is committed to supporting the study and efforts of emerging and practicing musicians," Song-a-Day Music Center Owner Ruth O'Neil said in a press release.

Levine is a 2022 graduate of E. O. Smith High School in Storrs Mansfield. Her main instrument is the clarinet, which she began playing while she was a student at Horace W. Porter School in Columbia.

Levine had a busy music career in high school, as she was a part of E. O. Smith's Concert Band.

Among her many musical experiences, Levine has participated in the Eastern Region, Connecticut All State and the New England Music Festivals. Levine has been a member of the Hartford Youth Wind Ensemble, the University of Connecticut Symphonic Band and the Willimantic Orchestra.

O'Neil said Levine was chosen as the recipient of the scholarship because of her commitment to music.

" We really felt that she had demonstrated a longterm commitment and drive toward her musical interests," O'Neil said.

This fall, Levine begins her collegiate studies at the University of Connecticut Storrs campus where she plans to major in music education and ultimately earn a doctorate in the field. In addition to teaching, Levine hopes to continue to perform in community orchestras.
