These Columbia theaters will offer $3 tickets Saturday on National Cinema Day

With three local theaters, the True/False Film Fest and the Murray Center for Documentary Journalism at the University of Missouri, Columbia is a relatively cinema-savvy community.

Movie buffs can enjoy seriously discounted tickets to offerings at two local multiplexes with the arrival of the first-ever National Cinema Day on Saturday. Three is the magic number, with more than 3,000 theaters across the country offering $3 tickets for every screening, regardless of showtime or format, The Associated Press reported.

In Columbia, two theaters have advertised they will participate — the Regal, formerly known as Stadium theater, at 2800 Goodwin Pointe Drive; and GQT Forum 8, 1209 Forum Katy Parkway. The B&B Fulton Cinema 8 also will mark the occasion, according to the National Cinema Day website.

Presented by The Cinema Foundation, the nonprofit associated with the National Association of Theater Owners, the initiative looks to boost attendance over Labor Day, "traditionally one of the slowest weekends in theaters," the AP's Jake Coyle reports.

National Cinema Day is also designed as a "thank you" to moviegoers for a summer that saw crowds come back to theaters post-pandemic, Cinema Foundation President Jackie Brenneman said in a statement cited by the AP.

"If successful, National Cinema Day could flood theaters with moviegoers and potentially prompt them to return in the fall," Coyle writes. "Before each showing, ticket buyers will be shown a sizzle reel of upcoming films from" a dozen studios.

One new movie set to screen at Regal and GQT this weekend is the megachurch mockumentary "Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul." starring Sterling K. Brown ("This is Us") and Regina Hall.

Other films scheduled for this weekend at both theaters include "Top Gun: Maverick," "DC League of Super-Pets," "Where the Crawdads Sing" and "The Invitation" as well as a reissue of "Spider-Man: No Way Home," among other options. Check listings online or by phone, as offerings might change.

Columbia is also home to Ragtag Cinema, 10 Hitt St.
