Which Columbus area athletes and teams won high school state championships in 2021-22?
From the beginning of the fall season in August to the end of the spring season in June, countless high school athletes and teams will compete for a chance to achieve the ultimate goal: winning a state championship.
In the 2020-21 school year, dozens of athletes and teams from the Columbus area won state titles. In 2021-22, many more hope to do the same — and in front of full crowds this time, which wasn't possible for large portions of last year.
Here's a list of all the Columbus area high school athletes and teams that have won state championships this year. The list will be updated throughout the 2021-22 school year.
Fall
Sam Evans, Worthington Christian, Division III golf
Evans shot a 70 on the first day and a 73 on the second day for a two-day total of 143. Only one Division III golfer has turned in a better score on Ohio State's Scarlet course, a 141 by Columbiana's Jared Wilson in 2017.
Columbus Academy, Division II boys golf
Columbus Academy shot a 304 on the first day of state and a 307 on the second day to win the state championship by just three strokes with a total of 611. The win earned Academy its fifth consecutive state championship.
Audrey Ryu, Dublin Jerome, Division I golf
Ryu shot a 71 on the first day of competition and followed it up with a 67 on the second day to win the state title by just one stroke over Aurora’s Brooklyn Millard. Jerome finished third as a team.
New Albany, Division I girls golf
After ending the first day in fourth place with a score of 304, New Albany shot a 284 on the second day to win the state championship with a two-round total of 588, five strokes better than runner-up Mason. Anna Ritter shot a 68 and Emerson Purcell shot a 69 to lead the Eagles to their fourth straight title.
Alyssa Shope, Gahanna, Division I cross country
With a time of 17:32.1, Shope finished more than seven seconds ahead of the second-place runner. Shope won all but three of the races she competed in this season and broke her own school record three times.
Watterson, field hockey
Molly Griffith scored the game-winning goal on a penalty stroke in overtime as Watterson beat Thomas Worthington 2-1 in the state title game. This is Watterson's second consecutive state championship and fifth overall.
Upper Arlington, boys and girls water polo
Both the Upper Arlington boys and girls teams captured state championships, as the girls won their third consecutive state title with a 9-5 win over the Cincinnati Mavericks and the boys won their first title in nine years with an 11-10 win over Toledo St. Francis.
Grandview, Division III boys soccer
Danny Claypool's hat trick led Grandview Heights to a 4-2 win over Columbiana Crestview to win the Bobcats' first team state championship.
Winter
Spencer Aurnou-Rhees, Division I swimming
Spencer Aurnou-Rhees, a St. Charles senior and a Texas signee, won state championships in both the 200 individual medley (1:46.03) and the 100 free (44.52). He was the only Division I male swimmer to win both of his championship races.
Hudson Williams, Division I swimming
Olentangy Liberty junior Hudson Williams won the 50 free with a time of 20.09.
Grant Gooding, Division I swimming
Grant Gooding, a junior at Upper Arlington and a Louisville commit, won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 54.37.
Gahanna, Division I girls swimming
Gahanna's 200 medley relay, swam by junior Marie Belli, senior Sami Kiss, senior Kendall Hitler and freshman Aubrey Briseno won the state championship with a time of 1:43.47, less than a tenth ahead of second place.
Emily Brown, Division I girls swimming
Dublin Coffman sophomore Emily Brown swept the 200 and 500 free for the second consecutive year, winning the 200 with a time of 1:46.91 and the 500 with a time of 4:45.47.
Martina Peroni, Division I swimming
Martina Peroni, an Olentangy senior and Duke commit, won the 200 individual medley for the second straight year with a time of 1:58.04. She also won the 100 butterfly, posting a state- and pool-record time of 52.96.
Carly Meeting, Division I swimming
Carly Meeting, a junior at New Albany, won both the 50 free (22.75) and the 100 backstroke (53.31).
Upper Arlington, Division I girls swimming
Upper Arlington's 200 free relay, swam by senior Caroline Porterfield, freshman Hayden Hollingsworth, senior Avery Catalano and senior Riley Huddleston, won the the state championship with a time of 1:32.61.
New Albany, Division I girls swimming
New Albany's 400 free relay, swam by Meeting, sophomore Ashlyn Morr, senior Marisa Downs and senior Ava Lachey won the state championship with a time of 3:23.86. That relay win powered the Eagles to their second consecutive team state championship.
Brady McInerney, Division II swimming
McInerney, a senior at DeSales and a Kentucky commit, won the 100 free for the second straight year with a time of 45.07 and also won the championship in the 50 free (20.65).
Eli Stoll, Division II swimming
Jonathan Alder junior Eli Stoll, who is committed to North Carolina State, won the 100 backstroke with a time of 48.47, nearly two seconds faster than second place and less than two-tenths off the state-record time of 48.29.
Raegan Ernst, Gymnastics
Dublin Jerome senior Raegan Ernst, who will run track at Dayton, won the all-around title with a score of 37.6. The win capped a gymnastics career in which Ernst won four district titles and didn't lose a meet in her senior year.
Carter Street, Division I bowling
Olentangy Liberty senior Carter Street won the Division I bowling individual championship with a three-round score of 732, which included a first-round score of 289. Street finished 13 pins ahead of second place.
Reynoldsburg, Division I girls basketball
With a 63-56 overtime win over Mason, Reynoldsburg won the first girls basketball state championship in program history. Imarianah Russell scored a game-high 28 points, bringing her to 2,002 career points, as she willed the Raiders to the title.
Omar Ayoub, Division I wrestling
After finishing as the state runner-up at 113 pounds last year, Dublin Coffman sophomore Omar Ayoub won at 126 pounds with a 6-4 decision against Pickerington Central senior Brennen Cernus.
Ty Wilson, Division I wrestling
Dublin Scioto sophomore Ty Wilson is halfway to four state championships in his four years of high school. Wilson won the title at 113 pounds last year and stepped up to 132 pounds this year, where he earned his second championship with a 9-7 win over Whitmer's Jeremy Ginter.
Connor Euton, Division I wrestling
Westerville North senior Connor Euton, an Iowa State commit, pinned Jarrel Miller from Lakewood St. Edward in just 1:39 to win his second consecutive state title. Euton won at 145 pounds last year.
Seth Shumate, Division I wrestling
Though he couldn't win four state championships in four years after the 2020 tournament was canceled due to the pandemic, Dublin Coffman senior Seth Shumate came as close as he could. With a 7-4 win over Teays Valley's Camden McDanel, who beat Shumate at the district tournament a week before, Shumate won his third state title.
Dylan Russo, Division I wrestling
Olentangy Liberty junior Dylan Russo won his second straight championship at 215 pounds with a 5-3 win over Oregon Clay's Ty Cobb.
David McClelland, Division II wrestling
DeSales junior David McClelland beat Louisville senior Pablo Castro 8-3 at 132 pounds to win his first Ohio wrestling state championship. McClelland, a Johnstown native, competed for Lake Highland Prep (FL) the last two years.
Mitchell Younger, Division II wrestling
Watterson freshman Mitchell Younger capped an undefeated season with a state championship at 144 pounds. Younger missed seven weeks in the regular season with a broken left foot but returned in time to win his first championship.
Antwaun Burns, Division II wrestling
London senior Antwawun Burns, who finished third last year at 157 pounds, came back in his final season to win the state title in the same weight class. He earned an 8-4 decision over Graham Local's Gunner Cramblett.
Pickerington Central, Division I boys basketball
Ten years to the day after Pickerington Central's only other basketball state championship, the Tigers snapped Centerville's 45-game win streak with a 55-48 win in the state championship game. Devin Royal led the way with a game-high 20 points.
Spring
DeSales, Division II boys lacrosse
DeSales avenged an earlier loss to Chagrin Falls with a 20-6 win in the Division II boys lacrosse state championship game. David Chintala scored nine goals to lead the Stallions to their first title since 2018.
New Albany, Division I girls lacrosse
After three seasons as the state runner-up, New Albany broke through with a 13-12 overtime win over Upper Arlington to claim its first state championship since the OHSAA sanctioned the sport in 2017. Sophomore Maddy Paz scored the game-winning goal on a shot from free position 50 seconds into overtime.
Upper Arlington, Division I boys lacrosse
In a rematch of the 2021 championship game, which Dublin Jerome won over Upper Arlington, the Golden Bears came out on top this time around with a 12-10 win for their first state title since the OHSAA sanctioned lacrosse — and the 17th in program history. Leo Caine led the way with four goals.
Pickerington Central, Division I boys track and field
Pickerington Central narrowly beat out Olentangy Orange with 31 points to the Pioneers' 30 to win the Division I boys team track and field state title, its first since 2019. The Tigers also won the 4x100 relay (41.22).
Gahanna, Division I girls track and field
The Lions won their first team state title since 2019 with 47 points, ahead of Westerville Central which finished second with 31 points. Gahanna also won the 4x200 relay (1:38.32).
Troy Lane, Pickerington Central, Division I boys track and field
Lane set a state record in the 100 with a time of 10.25 seconds, breaking Piqua's Brandon Saine's record of 10.38 from 2006. He also won the 200 (21.09).
Jayden Douglas, Beechcroft, Division I boys track and field
Douglas, a junior, won the 300 hurdles with a time of 37.17 seconds. He was runner-up in the event last year.
Thomas Worthington, Division I boys track and field
Thomas Worthington's 4x400 relay team of Shohaan Singh, Camden Beatty, Daniel Assoku and Eli Hitzhusen won the state title with a time of 3:17.42.
Joel Addo, Olentangy Orange, Division I boys track and field
Addo won the state title in the high jump. He jumped 6 feet, 8 inches for the win.
DJ Fillmore, Licking Heights, Division I boys track and field
Fillmore, a junior, jumped 24 feet, 11 inches to win the state title in the long jump.
Jack De Francesco, Hilliard Davidson, Division I boys track and field
After being runner-up last year, De Francesco won the pole vault title. He cleared 15 feet, 6 inches to take the win by four inches.
Camden Bentley, Gahanna, Division I girls track and field
Bentley, a junior, swept the hurdle events with wins in the 100 hurdles (13.25) and 300 hurdles (42.82). Her time in the 100 would've set a state record, but it was considered wind-aided.
Olentangy Orange, Division I girls track and field
The Olentangy Orange 4x100 relay team of Josephine Davis, Ava Musgrove, Cassidy Shimp and Teresa Christian won the state title with a time of 47.55.
Huntyr Butler, Heath, Division II boys track and field
Butler repeated as the 110 hurdles state champion with a time of 14.15.
Juliette Laracuente, Highland, Division II girls track and field
Laracuente defended her long jump state title with a jump of 19 feet, 5.75 inches — more than a foot longer than the second-place finisher and a distance that would've won the state title in any of the three divisions.
Collin Haj Abed, Grandview, Division III boys track and field
Haj Abed, last year's runner-up in the 110 hurdles, won the event this year with a time of 14.81 seconds. He also won the long jump with a jump of 22 feet, 2.75 inches.
Ashtan Winfrey, Africentric, Division III girls track and field
Winfrey, a sophomore, won the long jump with a jump of 18 feet, 8.75 inches — nearly a foot longer than the runner-up's distance.
