Dublin Coffman's Seth Shumate earned the 150th win of his prep career during a 61-12 victory over Hilliard Davidson on Jan. 20 in OCC-Central Division action.

•The Dublin Coffman wrestling team is well on its way to adding to its run of five consecutive league championships.

With a 61-12 win over Hilliard Davidson on Jan. 20, the Shamrocks are 3-0 in the OCC-Central Division with matches remaining Jan. 27 at home against Upper Arlington and Feb. 10 at Hilliard Bradley.

Against Davidson, senior Seth Shumate (190 pounds) picked up the 150th win of his prep career. Shumate won state championships at 195 as a freshman and junior and was a state qualifier at that weight as a sophomore, but the state tournament was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Coffman, which won the Licking Heights Invitational on Jan. 15, is preparing for the Rieman Invitational on Jan. 29 at Delaware Hayes and then will be host to one of the district sites for the Division I state dual tournament Feb. 5.

Qualifiers from each district tournament advance to the state duals Feb. 12 at Lakewood St. Edward.

•The DeSales wrestling team enters the Jimmy Wood Invitational on Jan. 29 at New Lexington, not to mention its entire CCL schedule taking place over the next two weeks, with six state-ranked wrestlers.

Max Shulaw is ranked first statewide at 215 pounds by BoroFanOhio.net, leading a group that also includes Andrew Barford (157, 16th), Owen Eagan (144, 10th), Zack Lopez (126, eighth), David McClelland (132, second) and Lincoln Shulaw (165, 10th).

One of coach Collin Palmer’s concerns entering February is bringing the rest of the team up to speed and continuing to get them varsity experience.

“We’re improving on things we needed to improve on from back in December. We have to keep capitalizing and growing as a team and a unit,” Palmer said. “The biggest issue is having a younger team, they have not been in this situation yet in high school. Our freshmen are running into seniors who are well-developed muscle- and technical-wise, so it’s an awakening for them. All these matches going into the postseason are all practice. Hopefully by the time we get to early February, we’ll be clicking.”
