This Columbus business needed a follow-up health inspection in August. It was a busy month

A Krystal location’s health inspection score dropped in a follow-up inspection, while 42 other food service establishments received perfect scores in August inspections.

Inspectors visited 89 restaurants, lounges and bars last month, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health’s online portal. Of those, 80 that offer food services received “A’s” in their routine inspections and nine earned “B’s”.

Restaurants receive one of four letter grades that are assigned based on how many points are deducted from 100:

  • “A” grades mean food safety is excellent is achieved by receiving 90-100 points

  • “B’s” are issued when there is “satisfactory compliance” with the business receiving 80-89 points

  • “C’s” mean there is marginal compliance and applied to scores between 70-79

  • “U’s” represent unsatisfactory compliance and are applied to scores of 69 or less.

Establishments that receive a “C” or “U” food safety grade will have at least one additional routine inspection added in a twelve month period, according to state law.

While no restaurant in Columbus failed their routine inspection between August 1 and August 31, the Krystal location at 4823 Buena Vista received a follow-up visit after its July inspection had violations that needed to be corrected within 10 calendar days.

The business received a 90 in its July 19 inspection with the inspector observing three health violations:

  • Several time or temperature control for safety (TCS) foods out of temperature located in the walk-in cooler and reach-in cooler. TCS foods must be maintained at 41 degrees or below except during preparation, cooking or cooling. The person in charge trashed the food.

  • The reach-in cooler in the front food area and the walk-in freezer in the main kitchen were not properly working. The walk-in cooler in the side main kitchen area was not in good repair.

  • Storage racks located in the walk-in cooler had an accumulation of grease and rust. This item was required to be corrected within 10 calendar days.

The health inspector returned to Krystal on August 4 for a follow-up inspection, and found the business had the same three violations again. This time Krystal received an 87 on its inspection report.

Krystal’s reach-in cooler in the front was still not working properly, and the seal was broken on the door. The walk-in cooler wasn’t working properly with the spring of the door not working and the seal broken. A person-in-charge put in a work order, the report reads, and all items must be corrected within 72 hours of inspection.

Storage racks in the walk-in cooler still had an accumulation of rust, and this must be corrected within 10 calendar days.
