COLUMBUS, N.M. - The birthday of the United States of America is just around the corner and in a few days the country will have reached the ripe old age of 246 years. The declaration of July 4, 1776 marked the end of a hard-fought battle for Americans’ right to self-governance and democratic rule. Independence Day marks the day the United States officially became its own nation, which in turn birthed the Civil Rights movement.

After two years of a global COVID-19 pandemic resulting in cancellations and modifications, Fourth of July celebrations and fireworks are returning in full force to the Village of Columbus. Residents are eager to renew a full observance of this important day by enjoying barbecues in their backyards, in parks or in trips to the beach or mountains, by attending fireworks displays or having their own fireworks at home.

It has been a traumatic summer for New Mexico because of the drought and devastating fires. Since fire danger still exists even as the monsoons have arrived, the Village of Columbus and Columbus Chamber of Commerce invite everyone to bring their fireworks on Monday to Albert Field Park in the village and Columbus Volunteer Fire Department will assist in lighting them.

The fireworks display will start around 9 p.m. and marks the end of a unique celebration that starts a few hours earlier at Gazebo Plaza across from Columbus City Hall.

Let all of Luna County come together, be it in Columbus or Deming, on Monday, July 4th to joyfully and peacefully commemorate and celebrate Independence Day.
