This Columbus fast food restaurant earned ‘C’ grade in September health inspections

A fast food restaurant received a “C” in its latest September health inspection with the presence of pests being among the violations that resulted in the low score.

Restaurants receive one of four letter grades that are assigned based on how many points are deducted from 100:

  • “A” grades mean food safety is excellent is achieved by receiving 90-100 points

  • “B’s” are issued when there is “satisfactory compliance” with the business receiving 80-89 points

  • “C’s” mean there is marginal compliance and applied to scores between 70-79

  • “U’s” represent unsatisfactory compliance and are applied to scores of 69 or less.

There were 72 restaurants, lounges and bars inspected in September, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health’s online portal. Of the 64 Columbus businesses offering food services that received “A’s” in their routine inspections, 26 of them earned perfect scores. and eight earned “B’s”.

Captain D’s at 3281 Victory Dr. was the only restaurant to receive lower than a “B” with a score of 78 on its Sept. 20 inspection. Establishments that receive a “C” or “U” food safety grade will have at least one additional routine inspection added in a twelve month period, according to state law.

According to the Captain D’s inspection report, the business lost points for a number of reasons including:

  • Ice chute of the ice machine with black residue on it, must be corrected in 72 hours

  • Food items stores at temperatures higher than 41 degrees in the walk-in cooler

  • The walk-in cooler wasn’t sealing properly causing the warmer temperatures, must be corrected in 10 days

  • Several containers were stacked wet instead of being air dried

  • Test strips used to determine chemical sanitizer concentration were water damaged and expired, must be corrected in 10 days

  • Significant accumulation of grease and food debris throughout the main kitchen, in between equipment, floors of the walk-in and reach-in coolers and storage area

  • Presence of live pests in the main kitchen area.

  • Dead pests were throughout the main kitchen area, under equipment, near equipment and on inside of walk-in cooler

No restaurant in Columbus received an unsatisfactory score in their routine inspection between September 1 and September 30. Here are the other scores for other restaurants inspected.
