Columbus homicide detectives say verbal altercation led to fatal South Side shooting

Columbus police homicide detectives announced Sunday that a suspect has been arrested in a fatal shooting early Saturday morning on the city's South Side.

Isaac A. Clark, 34, of the North Side, is charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting of David A. Davis, 36, at the rear of a home on the 500 block of East Whittier Street between Lisle Alley and Wager Street, just east of Parsons Avenue, detectives said.

Police were called at 4:41 a.m. Saturday about the shooting. Responding officers found Davis sufferng from a gunshot wound, detectives said.

Columbus Division of Fire medics transported Davis to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, Downtown, where he was pronounced dead at 5:05 a.m.

Homicide detectives investigating the shooting determined that Davis and Clark got into a verbal altercation, during which Clark pulled out a handgun and shot Davis. Clark then fled on foot, according to court documents.

Clark was identified by a single photograph as the gunman, according to a detective's signed affidavit.

According to court records, a hearing was scheduled on Monday morning for Clark, however, an assistant county prosecutor requested that Clark be released on his own recognizance prior to the hearing, which Municipal Court Judge Eileen Paley granted.

Clark's case is currently scheduled to be considered by a grand jury for consideration of an indictment or additional charges within the next two weeks.

Woman killed in South Hilltop stabbing

A 66-year-old woman died after being stabbed multiple times during what police said was a domestic dispute Sunday night in the South Hilltop.

Columbus police were called to a home on the 1900 block of Vaughn Street and found Rhonda Jones, 66, with multiple stab wounds. Jones was rushed to a nearby hospital but died from her injuries at 9:57 p.m. Sunday.

Officers found 69-year-old Michael Wright a short distance away from the scene and took him into custody. Wright has been charged with murder, according to court records. He is currently being held under guard at an area hospital.

Police said they believe the stabbing occurred during a domestic situation.

Columbus has seen an increase in domestic violence related homicides in 2023, with at least 10 reported so far this year. There were seven domestic homicides in the entirety of 2022.
