As summer unofficially comes to a close on Labor Day, travelers are making Columbus the place to be during the last weekend of the season.

Columbus is the top trending Airbnb destination for Labor Day weekend, according to a news release from the vacation rental company. Other cities in the top five include Raleigh, North Carolina; Tampa, Florida; North Kingstown, Rhode Island and Jacksonville, Florida.

The cities were selected after Airbnb used data to analyze reservations made by U.S. travelers from Jan. 1 to June 30 for Sept. 2-5 check-ins, according to the release.

Labor Day:Why do we celebrate Labor Day? The history of the holiday

Contributing to interest in Columbus this weekend may be the start of the Ohio State University football season Saturday, as the Buckeyes take on Notre Dame's Fighting Irish.

It's a major showdown between two of college football's traditional blue bloods, with Ohio State ranked No. 2 in the Associated Press college football poll and Notre Dame ranked No. 5. The game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on ABC.

The Buckeyes are 17.5-point favorites.

Ohio State last played Notre Dame on Jan. 1, 2016, in the Fiesta Bowl. The Buckeyes won 44-28.

The holiday weekend is often a busy time of year for Airbnb hosts. Last year, hosts made more than $300 million, with a median host payout of nearly $750 in extra income from the weekend’s stays, the company said.

Labor Day weekend is the top holiday for Airbnb, followed by Memorial Day weekend, Fourth of July and Thanksgiving.
