Columbus police arrest second man suspected in fatal shooting near Ohio State University

A second man named as a suspect in an April shooting that left one man dead and another injured near Ohio State University’s campus has been arrested by Columbus police.

Shemar A. Franklin, 26, of the city's East Side, turned himself in Monday at the Franklin County jail, according to a media release from the Columbus Division of Police. Franklin has been charged with murder and felonious assault and awaits his first court appearance May 10, according to Franklin County Municipal Court's online docket.

Franklin is one of three men who Columbus police have said are suspected of involvement in a fatal shooting in the early hours of April 21 on the 1700 block of North High Street. Columbus police and Ohio State police had both received reports of gun shots around 2:40 a.m. that morning at the intersection of North High Street and East 12th Avenue, which is across the street from the university's student activity center known as the Ohio Union.

When officers arrived at the scene, Columbus police said they found two men with gunshot wounds, both of whom were transported to separate hospitals.

Deijon Bedgood, 25, was pronounced dead at 3:04 a.m. at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Another 27-year-old man treated at a hospital where he was listed as being in stable condition, according to a police media release.

Surveillance video and a witness identified Franklin as the suspect who was fighting with the 27-year-old man who survived when he pulled out a gun and shot him, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Raymond C. Ladd, 26, of the Southeast Side, was arrested at the scene. In a probable cause affidavit, Columbus homicide detectives said that Ladd was identified by surveillance video as being the gunman who shot Bedgood in the chest and killed him.

Ladd has since been indicted by a Franklin County grand jury for aggravated murder, murder, attempted murder and felonious assault — all charges that include firearm specifications. He was scheduled to appear Wednesday afternoon in Franklin County Common Pleas Court for an arraignment.

Six days after the shooting, Columbus police released a photo of a third man who they believe was involved in the altercation and ensuing shooting. That man remains unidentified and at large.

Columbus police have identified a third person of interest in connection with a fight that led to one man being fatally shot and another wounded on April 21 at the intersection of North High Street and East 12th Avenue near the Ohio State University’s campus.
