Columbus police looking for 28-year-old man after woman dies in Southeast Side shooting

Columbus police are looking for a 28-year-old man who is accused of shooting a woman after an argument outside a Southeast Side apartment Monday afternoon.

Police said the 20-year-old woman was found shot around 12:45 p.m. Monday at the Independence Village apartments, located off of Refugee Road. Witnesses told police they heard 28-year-old Miles Gibson, of the Southeast Side, and the victim arguing shortly before hearing a single gunshot.

The woman, who was identified Tuesday as 20-year-old Kennedy Cowans, ran into the apartment complex and sought help. She was found by officers on the 3300 block of Brooke Colony Drive.

According to court records, Gibson's last known address is in the area of the apartment complex where the shooting took place.

Cowans was rushed to Mount Carmel East hospital but died at 3:02 p.m. Monday from her injuries.

A murder charge was filed against Gibson on Monday evening and an arrest warrant was issued. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call detectives at 614-645-4730 or call Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-TIPS.
