What Columbus residents should know about Bed Bath & Beyond declaring bankruptcy

National retailer Bed Bath & Beyond announced Sunday that it filed for bankruptcy and will eventually be closing all of its stores, including the Columbus Park Crossing location.

Bed Bath & Beyond filed for relief under Chapter 11 Sunday in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey. The retailer listed its estimated assets and liabilities as being in between $1 billion and $10 billion.

The company will be closing 360 Bed Bath & Beyond locations and 120 Buybuy Baby retail stores. It has received $240 million in financing to continue operating the stores through the liquidation process.

Since last September the company announced it was closing 354 locations in an attempt to stave off bankruptcy, with 149 closings being announced in February.

The Columbus location is not among the most updated list of store closings. The store will remain open for business and continue serving customers for now, Bed Bath & Beyond told the Ledger-Enquirer in a statement.

“During this time, we will be changing several of our customer programs and policies,” said the statement.

The policies among those changes include:

  • Customers can continue redeeming gift cards through May 8

  • Returns and exchanges will be processed in accordance with their usual policies until May 24 for items purchased before April 23.

  • The store will no longer accept coupons or Welcome Rewards+ discounts beginning April 26

More detailed information about the closing date of the Columbus store and final sales have not been announced. The company declined to comment on the number of employees in Columbus who will be affected by the closing.

“We thank our loyal customers for bringing us into their lives,” reads the statement. “And encourage them to visit us in-store and online to shop our closing sales.”
