These Columbus restaurants scored top grades in their health inspections last month

One Columbus restaurant received a “C” grade during health inspections last month, while nine establishments earned perfect scores.

Restaurants receive one of four letter grades that are assigned based on how many points are deducted from 100:

  • “A” grades mean food safety is excellent is achieved by receiving 90-100 points

  • “B’s” are issued when there is “satisfactory compliance” with the business receiving 80-89 points

  • “C’s” mean there is marginal compliance and applied to scores between 70-79

  • “U’s” represent unsatisfactory compliance and are applied to scores of 69 or less.

There were 33 restaurants, lounges and bars inspected in May, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health’s online portal. Thirty Columbus businesses that offer food services received “A’s” in their routine inspections and two earned “B’s”.

Cook’s Place at 2521 Airport Thruway in The Landings was the only restaurant to receive lower than a “B” with a score of 76. Establishments that receive a “C” or “U” food safety grade will have at least one additional routine inspection added in a 12-month period, according to state law.

According to the Cook’s Place inspection report, the business lost points for a number of reasons including:

  • A person putting on gloves without washing hands

  • Facility lacking a verifiable employee health policy

  • Yellow residue along the chute of the ice machine

  • Person engaged in food preparation without proper hair restraints

  • Facility lacking current inspection reported in public view of drive-thru window

  • Facility lacking test strips for sanitizer solution

No restaurant in Columbus failed their routine inspection between May 1 and May 31. Here are the other scores for other restaurants inspected.
