Summer is going out with a bang before fall arrives.

Wednesday, also the last day of summer, is expected to be hot in Columbus with a high of 93 degrees.

Although unusual, it's not unheard of for the state's capital to crack 90 degrees this late in the year, according to Nate McGinnis, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

The record latest date for 90-degree weather was Oct. 15, and the last time Columbus observed a high over 90 in October was three years ago, when the mercury hit 93 degrees on Oct. 3, 2019.

Today is likely last 90-degree day of 2022

The good news is that McGinnis and other meteorologists are predicting no more 90-degree days in Columbus for the rest of 2022.

"I can't give you a 100 percent guarantee, but based on climatology and the outlook for the next two weeks, it would take a very impressive pattern change to see 90s again for the year," McGinnis said.

A cold front is expected to make its way through the area late Wednesday and into Thursday, bringing below-normal temperatures for this time of year.

Thursday is expected to have a high of 68 and a low of 45 later that night. Much of the same is predicted for Friday, while Saturday and Sunday will be a bit warmer with highs in the low-to-mid 70s.

"We're going to be about 10 degrees below normal even on Friday. So, it's a very impressive cold front," McGinnis said.
