Comanche, Empire District Fair begins Friday

Aug. 10—Comanche and Empire residents can showcase their most prized livestock and fair entries this weekend, just ahead of the county fair.

The Comanche-Empire District Fair will launch Friday, Aug. 11, opening for entries from 7:30-9 a.m. at Patterson Avenue Baptist Youth Center.

Shelbi Morgan, Comanche Ag Teacher and one of the event organizers, said many of the exhibits will feature, 4-H items, as well as some horticulture entries such as, house plants, cut flowers, quilts, photographs and more.

The fair will open to the public from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11 at Patterson Avenue Baptist Church.

According to Morgan, lunch is served each year and this year they will serve barbecue pulled pork sandwiches.

The lunch fundraiser will set up from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 11, from the Oak College OHCE.

The following day, the livestock show will open on Saturday at the Comanche Ag Barn for Comanche or Empire exhibitors.

Participants can check in their livestock until 7:30 a.m. and the show will begin at 8 a.m.

Morgan said they typically show cattle, pigs, sheep and then goats.

"We always encourage a lot of our kids — our 4-H, FFA members, to come out and show," she said. "Especially if they're are new at showing, because it is a lot of fun and it's kind of a laid-back experience."

She said for those who are less experienced or those kids who are new to showing, the district fair is a great opportunity to get started and have fun at the same time.

According to Morgan, there will be younger kids in attendance who will be able to show and gain some experience as well.

"We'll have some younger kids — that are four or five years old sometimes out there with animals," she said. "So that's always really fun to watch them show."

According to Morgan, the district fair is always an exciting time and a great way prepare kids for the county fair.

She said the kids get to re-engage with one another as the summer comes to a close and the new school year begins between Comanche Public Schools and Empire Public Schools.

"It's a good experience for the kids," she said.

According to Morgan, many of their kids have been working on their projects all summer long and this is one of the first shows they can experience, before the county fair.

The district fair is open to Comanche and Empire exhibitors only.
