Comcast, Universal donate $2 million to Hurricane Ian relief

Comcast NBCUniversal, Universal Orlando’s parent company, and Universal Orlando are donating $2 million toward Hurricane Ian relief efforts, Comcast said Monday.

The Universal Orlando Foundation’s contribution includes donating food to those in need through local organizations, according to a release.

The total $2 million donation includes $1 million in cash and undisclosed “in-kind contributions” to the state’s Florida Disaster Fund, which assists residents statewide.

The rest of the donation will go to the Comcast NBCUniversal Employee Assistance Fund, the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, veteran-led disaster response organization Team Rubicon, United Way and the American Red Cross.

Comcast is also providing grants to Universal employees in distress through the Comcast NBCUniversal Employee Disaster Assistance Fund, which is primarily funded by employee donations, and the company is matching employee donations to eligible nonprofit disaster relief organizations.

The Walt Disney Co. is also distributing money from its relief fund to employees affected by Hurricanes Ian and Fiona, the company said Friday. Hurricane Fiona hit Puerto Rico Sept. 18, and thousands are still without power on the island two weeks later.

Disney is supporting additional local hurricane relief efforts through organizations like the American Red Cross, Feeding America and Heart of Florida United Way.
