Comedian Kevin Fredericks, better known as “KevOnStage,” has used relatable humor about family and faith to conquer the world of social media over the last 12 years. This weekend, he’s coming to Connecticut for the first time.

Fredericks will be performing today and Saturday at the Funny Bone Comedy Club, 194 Buckland Hills Drive, Suite #1054 in Manchester.

Speaking to the Courant ahead of his appearances, Fredericks said he will primarily make jokes about himself and the unique way he sees the world.

“I’m talking about my life. How I see the world differently than most other people. How I’m not really a manly man at all! I wish I was. I’m a new dog owner that’s changed my life and of course church!,” he said.

While he is all about the laughs, Fredericks is serious about building his comedy empire. In 2020, he took a leap of faith and launched his own studio in California. The studio handles all of his comedic content.

It’s also an avenue for Fredericks’s missions to provide opportunities for new talent, especially Black people, who are underrepresented in Hollywood both in front of and behind the camera.

This includes the Keep Your Distance Comedy Tour, which offered virtual performances from comedians of color via the KevonStage Studios App during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The KevonStage Studios App streams independent shows ranging from scripted comedy sitcoms to podcasts featuring prominent celebrities like actress Gabrielle Douglas, former NFL player Spice Adams, Journalist Jemele Hill and Grammy Award winner Kirk Franklin.

The app was his older brother’s idea, Fredericks said.

“I wanted to make independent movies. He came across this company and thought we would be better suited to make TV shows. So, we have a variety of comedic podcasts, unscripted and more recently scripted content that we are very excited about,” he said.

Along with managing his studio, Fredericks and his wife, woman-empowerment influencer Melissa Fredericks, recently became New York Times Bestsellers with their first new book, “Marriage Be Hard.”

The book, released on Sept. 13, talks about how to maintain a healthy relationship

“Marriage Be Hard” is 12 conversations to keep you and your spouse laughing and learning about love. Becoming a NYT bestseller isn’t even a dream we dreamed. But it feels amazing to have achieved such a feat,” he said.

Along with continuing his comedy tour, Fredericks is working on his next project.

“The newest and biggest project I’m working on is a scripted show called “Churchy,” [which is] loosely based on my childhood church experiences. It comes out on Oct. 30 and I can’t wait for people to see it,” he said.

Fredericks said he’s looking forward to the Manchester shows.

“It’s gonna be a good time. We have three amazing comedians with three very different approaches to comedy and material. You’ll have a great time,” he said.

Tickets to the Funny Bone show are $37 to $57, and admission is restricted to ages 21 and over. For tickets, call 860-432-8600 or visit hartford.funnybone.com.
