Comedian Nigel Ng, better known as Uncle Roger, received online backlash following an insensitive tweet referencing Ukraine.
The 30-year-old Chinese Malaysian stand-up comedian took to Twitter to promote his world tour on Feb. 24, just after Russia had launched an invasion into Ukraine, by posting, “Adding some Ukraine dates to my Haiyaa world tour! Stay tuned…” along with a laughing emoji.
The tweet, which has now been deleted, prompted online backlash from netizens who deemed the joke insensitive. Adding fuel to the fire, the comedian did not apologize but instead tweeted “Oops! Sometimes what’s funny in your head isn’t that funny in real life” with a grinning face with sweat emoji afterward.
Making such joke when people are suffering. Wow pic.twitter.com/RnCiYEvQpE

While some netizens defended the comedian’s “dark humor,” Ng’s response triggered further criticisms, with netizens telling him to apologize.
The least you could do is apologise and not whatever this half-assed tweet is. Also how is this funny at all in your head, care to share with the class? 🎤 also to others here if you are not directly affected by the war, it is not up to you to “accept” this “apology”

Dropping this here considering how relevant is is. Maybe instead of going "oops! Anyway here's my podcast" you should say one simple word. "Sorry"
I love your videos, I watch them every week. But the way you delt with this is very disappointing. It doesn't take much to apologise pic.twitter.com/Gf3cBfPNyT

The comedian went viral in 2020 when his “Uncle Roger” persona — a critical, middle-aged Asian man — reviewed an egg-fried rice video in a video uploaded to his official YouTube channel. Ng is currently on his “Haiyaa World Tour,” which has dates around the U.K., North America, Asia-Pacific and Europe.
