Comedy, apple blossoms and Art Birmingham: 5 things to do this weekend
While enjoying the beautiful spring weather this Mother’s Day weekend, you can check out an art fair in downtown Birmingham, a farmers market in Canton, a couple of fun comedy shows and a nature walk showcasing apple blossoms. Here are five things to do for the weekend of May 12-14.
Art Birmingham
The 42nd annual fine art fair produced by the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center in association with the Guild of Artists and Artisans will showcase approximately 150 juried artists and feature paintings, ceramics, photography, jewelry, glass, wood, sculptures, metal and mixed media works. There also will be a children's activity tent and food vendors.
10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday in Shain Park and on the streets surrounding it in downtown Birmingham. Free.
Apple Blossom Experience
Visitors will take a train ride to the orchards at Blake's and then wander leisurely through rows of apple trees and blossoms. There will be abundant photo opportunities among the blossoms.
10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday-Sunday and May 20-21 at Blake’s Orchard & Cider Mill, 17985 Armada Center in Armada. $5, free to children 2 and younger. Go to Blake Farm for tickets.
Clayton (CT) Thomas
Detroit native and comedian Clayton Thomas returns home with a new stand-up show, “Story Time,” that finds him sharing experiences, sometimes embarrassing and intimate, that have made him who he is and shaped his view of the world.
Thomas served as writer and actor on Bounce TV's hit sitcom "Family Time" for eight seasons and has appeared on "All Rise," "Modern Family," "Superior Donuts," "Insecure" and "Uncle Buck." He also was on HBO's All Def Comedy.
7:30 and 10:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 6 p.m. Sunday at Punchline Comedy Lounge, 29555 Northwestern Hwy., #312 in Southfield. $20 and up.
For the Love of Detroit – 30th Annual Comedy Night
This annual comedy night fundraiser to benefit Forgotten Harvest’s efforts to distribute food to more than 200 agencies in metro Detroit will feature Flint native Terry Crews and local and regional comedians Sam Rager, Jeff Scheen and Josh Adams.
8 p.m. Friday at Orchestra Hall, 3711 Woodward in Detroit. Tickets are $25-$90 and available at dso.org.
Canton Farmers Market
Another season launches with homegrown produce and local wares for sale, children's activities, live entertainment and more. The market also includes a food truck and a master gardener's booth that dispenses tip on how to improve flower and vegetable gardens.
Open 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Sundays through Oct. 15, with the exception of June 18, July 2 and Sept. 3. The market is at Preservation Park, 500 N. Ridge in Canton.
