Country Fair Spring Fling

Seaside United Methodist Church will be hosting the Country Fair Spring Fling, Saturday, May 20 at 1300 Seaside Road, Sunset Beach.

Seaside United Methodist Church will host its annual Country Fair Spring Fling from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, May 20 at the church, located at 1300 Seaside Road, Sunset Beach. In case of rain, the event will be held Saturday, May 27.

In the fellowship hall there will be tables filled with a huge variety of housewares ― dishes, baskets, small appliances, and knick-knacks. Also, there be a "better buys" station filled with bargain household items.

There will be a crafting corner, tools, hardware and electronic items. Also available to purchase will be sporting goods and equipment, bikes, golf clubs, fishing poles, tennis rackets, furniture and much more.

Also there will be a health and wellness station to check your blood pressure.

Hot dog, chips and drink is available for $5. Homemade baked goods will also be on sale.

All the proceeds will support the outreach ministries, and local nonprofits.

N.C. Maritime Museum events

The N.C. Maritime Museum at Southport presents the Third Tuesday program with speaker, Angie Zombek. Zombek will speak on "Competing Visions of the Post-War World: Military Reconstruction & Southern Resistance in North Carolina." The lecture will be at 7 p.m. May 16.

With the Civil War over, North Carolinians had survived but were faced with many choices about their future. To rejoin the Union, North Carolina had to rewrite its state Constitution, accept the abolition of slavery, and citizenship for the Freedmen.

Also at the museum will be holding a Deep Dive into History: Textiles and Dyeing, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, May 20.

History is most definitely not a black and white subject. From costly indigo from the tropics to humble madder roots from the Mediterranean, explore the dyestuffs that help fuel global economies and bring color to our lives.

Both events are free. The museum is located at 204 E. Moore St., Southport

American Legion Post 68

The next meeting for the American Legion Post 68 will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 18 at Magnolia Greens Golf Course, 1800 Tommy Jacobs Drive (banquet building next to Blossoms restaurant), Leland.

The speaker will discuss ongoing projects and plans for 2023.

Anyone wishing to have dinner at Blossoms Restaurant prior to the meeting should arrive no later than 4:45 p.m. All veterans are welcome to join the meeting.

Post 68 meets every third Thursday.

Brunswick Little Theatre presents Stand Up Southport - A Night of Comedy with 2023 National Tour for comedian Lee Hardin.

This one night only show will be held at 7 p.m. Friday May 19 at  8068 River Road, S.E. This is a clean comedy show.

Based out of Nashville, Hardin has been touring the country with his rollicking jokes and relatable stories. Over the years, Lee has shared the stage with comedians such as Henry Cho, Ryan Hamilton, and Nate Bargatze.

Opening for Hardin will be Carollynn Xavier straight out of the LA comedy scene, and Eben French Mastin, a BLT actor, will serve as emcee.

Taiko Drummers and Japanese Drum Music

The Triangle Taiko Drummers will be performing Taiko Drummers and Japanese Drum Music, May 19 at the Leland Cultural Arts Center.

The Triangle Taiko Drummers will be perform Taiko Drummers and Japanese Drum Music, 7-9 p.m. Friday, May 19 at the Leland Cultural Arts Center, 1212 Magnolia Village Way, Leland. Tickets are $15.

Taiko has evolved into ensemble performances called “kumi daiko” which celebrate the harmony of making powerful and beautiful music together. Triangle Taiko will perform a variety of traditional and modern piece. After the performance, they will lead participants through hands-on time with their taiko drums.

Contra Dance

Do you love to contra dance or always wanted to give it a try? Join the Cape Fear Contra Dance, for a night of live music and fun. Contra Dance lesson will be held 7-10 p.m. Saturday, May 20 at the Leland Cultural Arts Center, 1212 Magnolia Village Way, Leland.

The communal-style folk dance that is fun and easy to learn. A beginner's lesson is at 7 p.m. Please wear flat closed toe shoes.
