Comedy show, paint the street, pride brunch on tap this weekend in Springfield area

Paint under the stars, celebrate community achievement, or attend a drag show at events happening in Springfield this weekend.

Looking for something to do? Here are five events to attend:

Stand Up Comedy

Laugh and mingle at the Blue Grouch comedy show on Friday.

The show begins at 7:30 p.m. at 510 W. Maple Ave. S.

Kody Freeman will open up for national touring comedian and headliner, Day Peace. A performance from Clay Foley will also be featured, with Ryne Thorson hosting.

Paint The Street

Show off your art skills at the Paint the Street Block Party on Saturday.

The event takes place from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in downtown Springfield on Washington St.

Participants and groups can purchase a 6 x 6 square of a street and paint anything they wish. Painting materials will be provided. Squares are $35.

Men's Leadership Awards

Celebrate the achievements of men in the community at the Men's Leadership awards on Saturday.

The event takes place from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Hoogland Center for the Arts, 420 S. Sixth street.

Several awards will be given to men who have shown dedication, professionalism, and a commitment to excellence in their respective fields. The event will feature music by David Alexander, vendor booths and Shawn Gregory as guest speaker.

Highland fling

A new historical marker recognizing the history of MacMurray College and its predecessor, Illinois Women's College, will be dedicated at 4 p.m. Saturday during the MacMurray Alumni Weekend, which runs Friday through Sunday.

The marker at the corner of College Avenue and Clay Street in Jacksonville is a joint project of the MacMurray Foundation & Alumni Association and the Illinois State Historical Society with support from Jacksonville-based Bound to Stay Bound Books and Otto Roman.

Several hundred college alumni are expected to gather for an awards presentation, a chapel service, a reception for MacMurray Foundation Scholarship recipients and class reunions. The school closed in 2020. Visit the foundation's Facebook page for Alumni Weekend details.

Pride Drag Brunch

Support the LGBTQ community at the 4th annual Phoenix Center and Adams Family Pride Brunch on Sunday.

The event takes place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m at Buzz Bomb Brewing Co, 406 E. Adams St.

A drag show will be featured and VIP tickets will be available. VIP tickets include a meal from Cafe Moxo, a beer from Buzz Bomb or a Cocktail from Clique, and a reserved seat under the tent.

Vendors will be present. Tickets are $40.
