Comets crank walk-off vs. Pickford, Rayders roll Huskies

MACKINAW CITY — Nick Vieau cranked a double to left field in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Mackinaw City baseball team to a walk-off 12-11 victory over Pickford earlier this week.

The matchup came in a single seven-inning meeting in Mackinaw against the Panthers Wednesday.

“We were thankful to get a game in, with the way the weather has been this week,” Mackinaw coach Elijah May said. “Pickford is a solid group, they are a young group and they matched up really well with us.

“We were sloppy in the field tonight, committing eight errors. We also had our share of base running mistakes. We were able to get past those mistakes and battled through some good at-bats and saw some good offensive production tonight.”

Vieau and Braylon Currie each went three innings to start the game on the mound, with Vieau striking out four, while Lars Huffman earned the win in a final inning late.

Lucas Bergstrom went 2 for 4 with three RBI and a run scored, Huffman singled in a run and stole three bags, Trystan Swanson singled and drove in a run and Sebastian Pierce scored four runs and added three steals. Vieau also had the biggest hit of the day with the double, then added an RBI earlier in the game.

The win moved Mackinaw to 6-1 overall on the season.

Rayders sweep Huskies

BENZONIA — The Charlevoix baseball team got back on track earlier this week with a sweep over Benzie Central in wins of 13-0 and 12-2.

Bryce Johnson earned the shutout victory across four innings and one hit allowed, while also striking out eight. Ryan Pearl also pitched a clean fifth behind one strikeout.

The Rayders collected 15 hits at the plate, led by AJ Speigl’s 4 for 4 game that included three RBIs.

Owen Waha also doubled and drove in three, Troy Nickel doubled with two RBIs and two singles, Patrick Sterrett went 3 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI and Hunter Lemerand doubled in a run.

In game two, Emmett Bergmann earned the win with four strikeouts and just two hits allowed across four innings.

Jack Jarema singled, doubled and drove in four runs, Waha went 3 for 4 with an RBI and Sterrett was 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Bergmann also drove in two runs and Nickel had one RBI.

Comets take first loss 

MACKINAW CITY — Meeting Pickford in a non-conference single seven-inning matchup Wednesday night, the Mackinaw City softball team took its first defeat of the season.

The Comets fell in a 12-11 battle, which Julia Sullivan took the loss in. It came as Sullivan’s first attempt ever in the circle.

“She did amazing for being her first time out,” Mackinaw coach Bianca Thompson said. “And with it being a super cold night, she did great. I wish she wasn't a senior because I would have loved to work with her as a freshman.”

Marlie Postula came in over the remaining three innings and struck out seven, with two hits allowed.

Postula also came a triple shy of the cycle, as she singled, doubled had a home run and scored five runs.

Gracie Beauchamp singled and had four RBIs, MadisonSmith tripled and singled and Sullivan single, scored two runs and stole two bases.

Charlevoix splits with Benzie 

BENZONIA — Braving some cold temps earlier this week, the Charlevoix softball team earned a split with Benzie Central .

The Rayders earned a 17-1 win, though also took a 5-2 loss.

In the victory, Anna Kemp delivered an inside-the-park grand slam and finished the game with five RBIs, Danielle Mason went 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs, Haiydin Bissell singled twice and drove in two runs and Kaydence McPherson, Delaney Boehm and Avery Kita all had an RBI.

Kylie Dorst earned the pitching win behind seven strikeouts and eight hits allowed over six innings.

In the opener, Kemp singled twice and had an RBI and Kita also had a single.

Dorst took the loss across all five frames, giving up seven hits, while striking out three.
