Comic con, Zoo Boo, costumed bar crawl: 5 things to do in metro Detroit this weekend

Another festive weekend is in store for metro Detroiters, with Halloween-themed events, haunted attractions and a comic featuring the likes of Elvira and Alice Cooper.

Here is a list of things to do for the weekend of Oct. 14.

Hallowcrawl 2022 – Royal Oak

This annual bar crawl in downtown Royal Oak will have Halloween enthusiasts in costume visiting some of the city’s watering holes, which will offer themed drinks, DJs, games, karaoke photography and more.

The event runs 2-7 p.m. Oct. 15 in downtown Royal Oak. Go to Hallowcrawl to purchase tickets for beer, cocktails and shot specials along with a list participating locations.

Cider in the City

This fall event presented by the DTE Beacon Park Foundation programmed by The Downtown Detroit Partnership in downtown Detroit will feature fresh hot cider, pumpkins, caramel apples and more courtesy of Blake’s Farms. There will also be arts and crafts, face painting, horse-drawn hayrides, live music, food trucks and Lumen Detroit will be open featuring fall cocktails, craft beer and cider selections.

Scheduled live music performers for this weekend include Ashley Nelson, Me + Joe Smith, Ask Mary Duo and Nate Jones.

Visitors can preorder food items for pickup at Beacon Park.

Hours are 1-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Beacon Park Detroit, 1903 Grand River Ave. in Detroit.

Ghosts on the Balcony

The historic Birmingham 8 Theatre has been transformed to portray Victorian-era times for this haunted experience in 11 different areas of the building, including spaces never seen by the public.

Movies won’t be shown at the theater throughout October to make room for the haunted attraction.

Family-friendly haunted experiences for ages 5-12 that last about 30 minutes will be offered 2-5 p.m. Friday through Sunday for $20. Bloodcurdling haunted experiences for ages 13 and over that last approximately 60 minutes will be 7-10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday for $30. Birmingham 8, Powered by Emagine, 211 S. Old Woodward in Birmingham.

Motor City Comic Con

This comic and pop-culture event will host more than 250 comic book artists, writers and creators, as well as celebrities from TV and film.

There'll be comics for sale, along with collectible toys, anime, movies, pop culture crafts and gaming merchandise.

Detroit-born rocker Alice Cooper, actors Jamie Farr and Loretta Swit from the classic sitcom “MAS*H” and Laurie Holden, who played Andrea on AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” are a few celebrities scheduled to be in attendance.

The show runs Oct. 14-16 at the Suburban Collection Showplace, 46100 Grand River Ave. in Novi. Times, tickets and a list of attractions are available at motorcitycomiccon.com/

Zoo Boo at the Detroit Zoo

Strolling entertainment, pumpkin displays, face painting, photo opportunities, trick-or-treating stations and more will take place at the Detroit Zoo until dark for this annual “merry-not-scary” Halloween celebration.

Themed weekends include: Witches, Warlocks and Werewolves Oct. 15-16 and Heroes and Villains Oct. 21-23.

Hours are 2-6 p.m. at the Detroit Zoo, 8450 W. Ten Mile in Royal Oak. General admission is $17-$23, children under 2 are free. $8 for parking.
