Like comics? Here's how to get a free one from a new store on Fort Bragg

FORT BRAGG — A new store on Fort Bragg will hand out free comics this weekend to commemorate Free Comic Book Day.

The event, hosted by Ultimate Comics, starts at 10 a.m. Saturday at the store in the North Post Exchange at Second and Butner roads.

Ultimate Comics, which was founded in 2003 and has stores in the Triangle area, opened on Fort Bragg in November, said Siena Fallon, managing partner of Ultimate Comics.

It touts itself as the largest comic book chain in North Carolina and features comic books, Japanese comic books known as manga, toys and collectibles.

Fallon said that on Free Comic Book Day, the store will hand out “thousands of free comics all day long,” while fans can “meet professional comic and manga creators for free signatures, take photos with cosplayers, buy discounted vintage comics and more."

Free Comic Book Day is an annual celebration on the first Saturday in May, according to the National Day Calendar website.

Among the comic books that will be handed out are editions of “Spider-Man,” “Dog Man” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and characters from the “Justice League,” Fallon said.

“Old school comic collectors will also be able to dig through the tables of vintage comics,” which will be available for $2.

Christos Gage, writer of Marvel’s comic series “Fortnite x Marvel: Zero War” will sign comics from noon to 3 p.m., while other professional comic creators will also be around to meet fans.

Manga fans will be able to meet professional manga artists like Whyt Manga, creator of the “Apple Black” series, during the morning, Fallon said.

“The fun doesn’t end there,” Fallon said. “Cosplayers from North Carolina-based cosplay collective, The Variant, will be dressed as fan-favorite Marvel and DC characters and taking photos with attendees.”

The event is open to the public, and non-Department of Defense civilians can obtain a visitor’s pass from the Fort Bragg Visitors Center.

Fallon said the first 200 people in line will also receive a special promotion courtesy of Fort Bragg’s Papa Johns.
