Jimmy Carter’s grandson gives update on beloved former president during event honoring him

Former President Jimmy Carter’s grandson said Tuesday that his grandparents are resting comfortably inside their long-time home in Plains three months after the former president announced he would begin receiving home hospice care instead of additional medical intervention.

“They’re coming to the end,” Jason Carter said. “He’s going to be 99-years old in October, but right now, it’s sort of the perfect way for them to spend these last days together at home in Plains. They’re together, and they’ve been together for 70-plus years.”

Carter joined other dignitaries outside Norcross’ Global Mall Tuesday as the Gateway 85 Community Improvement District honored both the former president and road named after him.

“We are excited to have you here with us today at this incredible event to honor Jimmy Carter, the man and the boulevard,” said Gateway 85 CID Director Emory Morsberger.

Among the dignitaries was Carter’s UN Ambassador Andrew Young. He spoke about visiting the former president last month.

“We laughed and joked about old times for half an hour,” Young said. “He greets everybody. It’s amazing to me how many names he remembers.”

Gateway 85 points out that the nine-mile stretch for road is probably the most diverse road in Georgia. Jason Carter thought his grandfather would appreciate that.

“This is something I think is totally appropriate for him,” Carter said. “It’s diverse. It’s exciting. It’s a place where sort of the world happens all at once. I think he would love it.”
