Co-working office holds grand opening in downtown Hagerstown

A new co-working space recently opened its doors in downtown Hagerstown with a ribbon-cutting and celebration, according to a news release from the city.

Urban Works at 6 W. Washington St. cut the ribbon July 12 that was attended by Mayor Tekesha Martinez; Herb Melrath Maryland Small Business Development Center Washington-Western Region business consultant; Linda Spence, Washington County business specialist; Jill Thompson, city Department of Community & Economic Development director; Doug Reaser, city business development specialist; and Chris Siemerling, city economic development specialist.

Urban Works is owned by Jay Sachdev, who said the business is meant to cater to businesses that are just starting out, expanding, or in need of a quiet space.

"We are offering short-term rentals for flexibility so tenants don’t feel like they have to be locked in long-term, which is ideal for visitors to the area that may be here on business so they have everything they need”, he said in the release.

The business is running a promotional summer sale where tenants get 50% off all first payments (day/week/month membership) through the end of August. The office is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Hospice of Washington County CEO to depart in August to lead Denver Hospice

Hospice of Washington County CEO Ernesto Lopez will be leaving the organization Aug. 18 to assume the role of president of The Denver Hospice in Colorado, according to a news release from Hospice of Washington County.

Lopez joined the Hagerstown-based hospice in July 2017 and led the organization through COIVD-19 as well as the launch and subsequent growth of its inpatient hospice care center Doey’s House and significant expansion of its community-wide grief and bereavement programs. He also oversaw the opening of its sister hospice, Franklin Hospice, serving Chambersburg, Pa., and surrounding Franklin County.

“Throughout his tenure, Ernesto has fostered a culture of excellence, encouraging innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the organization,” Jim Pierne, chairman of the board of Hospice of Washington County, said in the release. “His strategic vision has propelled Hospice of Washington County to new heights, strengthening its reputation as a leading provider of compassionate end-of-life care.”

The hospice board named Associate Vice President of Operations Sara McKay as acting CEO. McKay brings 15 years of progressive experience and leadership in hospice to this new role, according to the release. She joined Hospice of Washington County in 2019 as director of marketing and was promoted to associate vice president of operations in July 2020.

Heaton named president, general manager of Antietam Broadband

Schurz Communications Inc. recently appointed Tony Heaton as president and general manager of Antietam Broadband in Hagerstown, according to a news release from Schurz.

Heaton has been with Antietam Broadband since 1989 and assumes the role from Brian Lynch, senior vice president of broadband with Schurz Communications, who also led Antietam Broadband as part of his work with the Schurz Broadband portfolio.

“Tony is an oustanding leader who is deeply involved in the community and dedicated to providing the best possible service to our Antietam customers,” Lynch said in the release. “The Schurz and Antietam teams are thrilled that he is managing the business and will continue to drive the company’s ongoing growth across the region.”

Heaton was most recently the director of media services where he developed and implemented strategic plans resulting in significant revenue growth and community service awards for the company.

Heaton currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Washington County Chamber of Commerce. Prior to joining Schurz Communications, he began his career in the broadband cable industry with sales roles at Cable AdCom and Antietam Cable Television.
