Comings & Goings: Kokomos in Lewisberry has new owner; coffee shop opens in McSherrystown

A new sports bar is opening in the former Kokomos Sports Bar & Grill in Newberry Township.

Horn Pub, a restaurant serving turkey legs, chicken wings and more, will open sometime in August, according to the restaurant's Facebook posts.

LaBull, LLC and Horn Pub, LLC purchased the 4,000-square-foot restaurant at 691 Yorktown Road, Lewisberry, as well as its liquor license, a 6-acre property and a 17-room motel.

Britton Coffee Co: 2633 Baltimore Pike , Hanover

Britton Coffee Co. is opening a McSherrystown location on Aug. 2. Hours of operation will be 6 a.m.- 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 7 a.m.- 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Clean Plate Nutrition: 12 E. 7th Ave., York

Clean Plate Nutrition, a healthy eating, locally owned meal subscription service, is opening a second location in York. The meal-service will still operate the Market Street location as well.

House of Flowers: 15 N. Beaver St., York

House of Flowers opened in May and will hold a ribbon cutting on Aug. 4, before the Frist Friday events in downtown York. The plant store offers a variety of house plants, succulents, flowers, air plants, pots, plant-related gifts and more.

More than 90 vendors and speakers are coming to the York Expo Center to participate in all things related to natural health and holistic wellness.

The 2023 New Visions Holistic Expo will feature more vendors than in previous years, including local farmers market, keto based food, chiropractic, massage, nutrition and a celebrity psychic.

UPMC in Central Pa.

UPMC in Central Pa. has received the American Heart Association Get With The Guidelines awards for demonstrating commitment to following up-to-date, research-based guidelines for the treatment of heart disease, stroke and diabetes, ultimately leading to more lives saved, shorter recovery times and fewer readmissions to the hospital.

UPMC Harrisburg, UPMC Community Osteopathic, UPMC West Shore, UPMC Lititz, UPMC Hanover, UPMC Memorial and UPMC Carlisle all achieved at least one American Heart Association Get With The Guidelines Gold Plus award. This year, UPMC in Central Pa. achieved the following recognitions:

UPMC Hanover achieved the Get With The Guidelines- Stroke Gold Plus award and Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll.

UPMC Memorial achieved the Get With The Guidelines- Stroke Gold Plus award, Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite and Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll.

To be awarded Gold Plus, a hospital must reach 85% compliance in over numerous quality measures as outlined by the American Heart Association for at least 24 consecutive months, according to a news release.

Pennsylvania Bar Association Solo and Small Firm Section Award

Sara A. Austin, a partner at Austin Law Firm LLC in York, received the annual Pennsylvania Bar Association Solo and Small Firm Section Award during the section’s annual conference July 26-28, according to a news release.

The award honors an individual lawyer who, or law firm that, has enhanced the professional reputations and abilities of solo and small firm attorneys in Pennsylvania.

Austin served as the first woman bar association president from York County and the third woman president in the history of the association during her 2016-17 term.

A former chair and current member of the Section, Austin uses the section’s Listserv to respond to members’ inquiries, offer practice management tips and share information with colleagues. While chair of the section in 2017-19, Austin was instrumental in developing sessions for a “Starting Your Own Firm” class at Widener University Commonwealth Law School, where she serves as an adjunct professor.

Grants

The City of York Department of Economic and Community Development is launching the 3E grant program geared at helping small businesses improve operational capacity through education, empowerment and enhancement. The grants of up to $5,000 will be awarded to small businesses owned by ethnic and racial minorities, women, and/or persons with disabilities.

Qualifying expenses must be related to education through classes, certificates or training; empowerment through retreats, workshops or coaching; and enhancements like new software, products or equipment to promote business growth and stability.

To be eligible for the 3E grant program, a business must meet specific criteria, including but not limited to the following:• Must qualify as a small business – The City of York defines a small business as a business operating with 10 or fewer full-time employees.• Business majority must be owned by a minority, woman or person with a disability.• Earn $500,000 or less in annual gross revenues.• Must be registered, licensed and in good standing on all city taxes and obligations.• Business must be physically located within a qualified census tract in the City of York.
