Comings and goings: Lubbock's openings, closings, confirmed rumors from February 2023

From restaurants to entertainment venues, Lubbock saw plenty of business in the second month of 2023. Here's a look at what opened, closed, and confirmed upcoming spots in the Hub City.

Here's which businesses opened, moved in Lubbock in February 2023:

Crush Teriyaki & Wok

What: Crush Teriyaki & Wok is owned by a couple that ran a restaurant in the South Plains Mall for 10 years, until the pandemic hit. After a two-year absence, the business reopened on 82nd Street, opening their doors just a few days before Valentine's Day.

Since then, the business has seen a boom of support, rapidly gaining 1,600 likes and 1,900 followers on their Facebook page as of Feb. 23.

When: Mid-February.

Where: 5109 82nd St. Unit #9.

Gym Culture

What: A family-owned and operated premier fitness center opened its doors in mid-February, offering a variety of classes. Yoga, dance, kickboxing, and weight training classes cycle through the week. Visit its website, mygymculture.com.

When: Feb. 15.

Where: 6609 Milwaukee Ave.

HobbyTown

What: HobbyTown, previously at 5610 Frankford Ave. E, moved to its new, vibrant building on 82nd Street this month. The move was made to double the size of the locally owned HobbyTown, and will allow customers to have club meetings, take craft classes and explore more inventory.

When: Feb. 11.

Where: 7021 82nd St.

Las Palmas

What: This restaurant claims 100% authentic Mexican cuisine and is ran by the same owners as Aranda’s Taqueria,  4001 34th St.

When: Feb. 20.

Where: 2821 50th St.

Socialite Zero

What: This is the newest women's boutique store to open in Lubbock. Check out their Instagram @socialite_zero to see more of what they offer.

When: Feb. 17.

Where: The Village Shopping Center, 4414 82nd St., Suite 214.

Texas Roadhouse

What: Texas Roadhouse moved to a new location in February and closed its 4810 S. Loop 289 space on Feb. 5. The decision to move was due to needing more seating, parking, and to expand the dining room.

When: Feb. 8, 2023.

Where: 6101 Slide Road.

Businesses closed in February 2023 includes

1000 Degrees Pizza on 19th

What: Just a month after celebrating its second anniversary, one of two 1000 Degrees Pizza locations announced it would close by the end of the month.

When: Last day was Feb. 28.

Where: 3711 19th St.

Samburgers

What: The longtime burger restaurant went up for grabs this month, as the owner decided to sell. Rising costs were a deciding factor.

When: Listed for sale at the end of February.

Where: 4447 34th St.

Here's which businesses, restaurants confirmed or denied Lubbock locations in February 2023:

Dave & Busters

Announced: Dave & Busters will open on May 1 at in the West End Center at 2620 W. Loop 289. The company is looking for 175 employees, according to a Feb. 16 news release.

In-N-Out

Denied: In 2016, In-N-Out planned to enter the West End Shopping Center. Two years passed and the property was sold, with no Flying Dutchmans reaching hungry customers. The company said they weren't coming to Lubbock, yet, in 2018. That statement has not changed for 2023.

Nashbird

Denied: Despite rumors and excitement about Nashbird, which is known for Hot Chicken Sandwiches, the company does not have any plans to join West Texas/Lubbock any time soon, according to a company spokesperson on Feb. 16.

Pet Supplies Plus

Confirmed: Pet Supplies Plus will have a second location opening in late spring/early summer 2023, according to Pak Harris Enterprises, which is helping set up the upcoming store. The new location will be a former Eckerd Drugstore at 5120 34th St.

Rally House

Announced: Rally House, a sporting goods store with 20 locations across Texas, announced an upcoming Lubbock location. The new store will open at 5017 Milwaukee Ave., Suite 100, in the Canyon West shopping center and will offer an array of sports apparel and local merchandise in mid-2023.

Rusty Taco

Confirmed: On Feb. 24, The Nairn Management Group confirmed a Rusty Taco will begin construction soon near the T-Mobile store in the Canyon West Shopping Center. The restaurant will take over the former Growler USA space at 6030 Marsha Sharp Freeway, taking up 3,900 sq. ft. It will also have a patio. Rusty Taco is expected to open in April or May.

Snooze A.M.

Announced: Snooze A.M. will tentatively open on March 29 at 413 University Ave. The A-J has reached out for more information, but has not yet received a response.

Tecovas

Confirmed: Tecovas, known for its world-renowned handmade boots, will have a pop-up warehouse sale in the former 10,000 sq. ft. Pier 1 space at 5015 Milwaukee Ave. The pop up will be from March 10-12.

Uptown Cheapskate

Confirmed: Uptown Cheapskate, a store that buys and sells gently used apparel, handbags, and accessories, has been hinting at opening soon at the former David's Bridal at 5027 Milwaukee, Building F, Suite 100, in the Canyon West Shopping Center. The business should be opening in the next few weeks.
