Comings and goings: Lubbock's openings, closings, confirmed rumors from April 2023

From restaurants to real estate, Lubbock saw plenty of business in the fourth month of 2023. Here's a look at what opened, closed, and confirmed upcoming spots in the Hub City.

Here's which Lubbock businesses opened or moved in April 2023:

Benito's

What: A new Italian restaurant joined the restaurant lineup, filling the former Gilbert's location at 2608 Salem Avenue. The business features classic Italian dishes, including Tiramisu.

When: April 20.

Where: 2608 Salem Ave.

Bnails

What: This salon, which has locations in Amarillo, Hereford and Austin, offers an array of services, which can be seen at bnails.com. Bnails in Lubbock opened their doors at 12811 Indiana Ave., Suite 400.

When: Mid-April.

Where: 12811 Indiana Ave., Suite 400.

Halff

What: Halff, an employee-owned and multidiscipline engineering and architecture firm, opened their first Lubbock office in April. The company will offer a variety of services.

La Placita

What: The family behind Rico Empanadas food truck initially opened La Placita, a Puerto Rican restaurant, at 2641 130th St., Suite 69. In April, they moved to a bigger space.

When: April 8.

Where: 704 US-62 in Wolfforth.

Little Red Riding Hood Nursery

What: Little Red Riding Hood Nursery has been in Lubbock for 41 years, and recently expanded to an 8,400 sq. ft. greenhouse. By 2025, Little Red Nursery hopes to have another retail building. A later plan includes a venue for classes, events and weddings.

When: April 1.

Mi Linda Michocana

What: Mi Linda Michocana, a business specializing in Mexican-style treats, moved to their new location. The new space features vibrant pinks, blues, and comfortable seating.

When: April 11.

Where: 2331 34th St.

Mulligans Golf Bar

What: Mulligans Golf Bar offers a space for golfers to practice their swing, get a bite and a drink. People can book reservations at mulliganstx.com.

When: April 21.

Where: 4525 Milwaukee Ave.

Reside Real Estate Co.

What: Reside Real Estate Co. is a real estate company that touts itself as "Lubbock Area's most innovative real estate team," on their website.

When: April 13.

Where: 6901 Quaker Ave. Suite 100.

School of Rock

What: School of Rock offers in-person and online music lessons for students of all ages. The business recently moved to their new location on April 16. A grand opening is set for May 6.

When: April 16.

Shotgun Sue's Saloon

What: Owners Vince Vasquez and Tim Tremoni had initially looked into opening a taqueria in the Depot District, but when they saw 1718 Buddy Holly Ave., Suite B, they knew it had to be a saloon. The duo leaned into the historic Western aesthetic, offering unique drinks and a sense of community.

When: April 13.

Toot'n Totum

What: The first of nearly 20 Lubbock Toot'n Totums opened this month. This convenience store chain is based out of Amarillo and started in the 1950s. The family is still involved in the business, which announced its "Lubbock or bust" expansion in 2022. Another location is expected to open in early May.

When: April 20.

Here's which businesses closed in April 2023:

Sunburst Market

Sunburst Market, located at 1511 County Road 7140, will close at the end of this month.

What: After 50 years of business, Sunburst Market announced that they would be closing their doors at the end of April with an estate sale. The Thiel family started the farm and market in 1939, when five potato farmers moved from Idaho to Hereford.

The property won't stay empty for long though, as Idalou's Faith2Farm announced that they would growing into the location later this summer.

When: April 30.

Here's which businesses, restaurants confirmed or denied Lubbock locations in April 2023:

Salata Salad Kitchen

Confirmed: Six months after announcing their search to introduce a healthy food franchise to Lubbock, Houston-based Salata Salad Kitchen confirmed that the Hub City will be getting three locations. One of those is estimated to open in the fall of 2023.

Dura-Line

Announced: Dura-Line, a global manufacturer and distributor of telecommunications infrastructure, announced that they would open a manufacturing facility at Lubbock Logistics Center II, 904 Lubbock Business Park Blvd. Production is estimated to begin in the second half of 2024.

Faith2Farm

Confirmed: Faith2Farm, a farm and market in Idalou, will add a new farm and store at 1511 E. County Road 7140 in Lubbock. They hope to open in the summer.

Frost Brewhouse

Confirmed: The highly anticipated Frost Brewhouse, 3121 34th St., is expected to open in mid-May, according to the business' Instagram.
