Comings and Goings: Wrightsville will soon get a new sub shop

A new sub shop is coming to Wrightsville.

Riverside Subs, owned and operated by Disma Campailla and his wife, will open in May. Campailla said he grew up working for his family’s restaurant, Vecchia Sicilia Pizza, which opened in 1997.

Riverside Subs will be at 246 Hellam St., in the former Casa’ Doria Pizza location, which closed last year. The 1,100-square-foot space can seat 40-45 guests, and the new restaurant will offer a variety of menu options, including subs, wraps, appetizers and salads.

The hours of operation will be: Tuesday-Thursday, 11 a.m.- 9 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays, 11 a.m.- 10 p.m.

York

The Pennsylvania School Safety Institute will hold a ribbon cutting on May 8.

This newly established institute provides hands-on experiences and classroom training designed to address emerging security threats that may occur in school buildings, on district property or at other locations where students and staff may be present, per a news release. District personnel, security staff and law enforcement officials learn de-escalation tactics in the institute's state-of-the-art multiroom simulator and 360-degree augmented reality.

The institute was established in 2022 and original funding was provided by the Pennsylvania School Boards Association Trust.

The York County Food Bank will hold a ribbon cutting for its new warehouse on Thursday, May 4 at 4 p.m.

Valosh Pastry Shop: 23 E. High St, Elizabethtown

Valosh Pastry Shop, a Puerto Rican-inspired French Patisserie, will open May 2.

Valosh is "a creative, bold and decadent laboratory for the unaverage and adventurous pastry tasters," according to the shop's website. Offering treats like pistachio tarts, lemon and lavender cake and double chocolate brownies, Valosh creates desserts for people who like flavor, but not overly sweet treats.

Layoffs

David’s Bridal, LLC, has issued a WARN notice that it will layoff more than 9,000 people nationwide. The total for Pennsylvania has not been determined, but the wedding attire company will lay off associates across 15 stores in 9 counties, including York.

The layoffs will happen in three phase. Phase one occurred on April 14. The next phase will be from May 13- 27, and the final phase will be June 12-August 11.

Announcements

York

WellSpan has partnered with CRDC USA, a building materials company that converts plastic waste into climate-resilient concrete additives. The partnership will allow WellSpan York Hospital to repurpose a broad scope of plastics, keeping them out of local landfills and the incinerator while also benefiting durable solutions in the construction industry.

Mechanicsburg

The Cumberland Valley Preservation Society (CVPS), a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and enjoyment of historical sites and buildings, is relocating the Junkin House on May 1.

The Junkin House, a stone farmhouse circa 1747, is considered possibly the oldest structure in Silver Spring Township. Its relocation and restoration is an inaugural project for the organization, which has been 10 years in the making. The house will become a museum of local history and collections from Bud Gaskin and Hempt Farms horse racing will be displayed in it. The new site will also host historical and educational lectures.

HSS Investors, LLC donated $50,000 in September 2022 to help with land development and the construction of the house foundation, which will allow for the house to move to its final location.

The Manufacturers’ Association and Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology have announced a new workforce and training partnership to provide high quality training and education to the manufacturing industry. The partnership will focus on reskilling and upskilling the incumbent workforce with training programs that are tailored to the specific needs of the manufacturing industry covering a wide range of topics, from basic manufacturing processes to advanced technologies and automation.

Weldon Solutions, a cylindrical grinder and robotic automation systems manufacturer, has completed the expansion of its York County headquarters in West Manchester Township, per a news release.

The production shop and warehouse has been expanded by 18,000 square feet and the office by an extra 3,000 square feet, due to increased customer demand. As a result of the expansion, the facility now totals 61,000 square feet, which will help facilitate new product development and additional team growth.

Events

Sunny Day Camp and is being held at the Lafayette Fire Company, 63 Lafayette Way, Lancaster, from 9 a.m.- 2 p.m., May 20. Registration begins at 8 a.m.

This free one-day camp allows children and adults with special needs to meet law enforcement and other first responders, who will give presentations. There will be K-9 dogs, drones, fire trucks and special vehicles available, and participants get a T-shirt and shorts to wear. Lunch will be served after the presentation and and then there will be a graduation ceremony.

The York County Economic Alliance has announced recent professional accomplishments of leaders within the organization.

Catherine Roque, Marketing Manager, will become the President-Elect of the Leadership York Board of Directors in 2023, where she will chair the Strategic Planning Committee.

Brendan Salyards, Manager of Economic Initiatives, joined the 2023 Leadership Training Program class of Leadership York, and also graduated recently from the Federal Reserve's Reinventing Our Communities cohort program.

Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania and Maryland has named Brian McCaul as Vice President of Gas Operations, effective May 1 and based in Canonsburg.

“Columbia Gas is dedicated to ensuring quality service and the safety of our customers, employees and the communities we serve,” Columbia Gas President and COO Mark Kempic said. “Brian has proven success in these key areas. He brings a wealth of energy expertise to the organization, and we welcome him into this role.”

McCaul has three decades of experience in the energy industry. He most recently served as the Regional Solar General Manager for NextEra Energy Resources with responsibility for the company’s solar fields and battery storage facilities from Arkansas to Southern Florida.
