Ukrainians gathered at St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Cathedral on July 4 to commemorate writer Victoria Amelina, who was killed in a Russian missile strike on Kramatorsk on June 27.

The service was attended by the family and close relatives of Amelina, renowned writers, friends and colleagues, human rights activists, members of PEN Ukraine, representatives of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and representatives of Ukrainian and foreign media.

Amelina sustained severe injuries during the missile strike on the RIA Pizza cafe. She was accompanying a delegation from Colombia as part of the “Aguanta Ucrania” (Support Ukraine) campaign, which included Sergio Jaramillo, the former Commissioner for Peace in Colombia, journalist Catalina Gómez, and writer Héctor Abad.

Ukrainian writer Oksana Zabuzhko has recognized Victoria Amelina as a prominent figure in Ukraine’s new Executed Renaissance — writers and artists who have been murdered by the Russian invaders.
