Commerce City man arrested in hit-and-run crash that killed parafencer

DENVER (KDVR) — Lakewood police have arrested a Commerce City man suspected of killing a pedestrian in a hit-and-run crash on Feb. 23.

The crash occurred at about 7:24 p.m. on Feb. 23 near West 23rd Avenue and Kipling Street, resulting in a Medina Alert as police searched for a Chevy Camaro.

The suspect was identified as Jimmy Lee Chavez, 40, of Commerce City.

Police identified the pedestrian killed as Terre Engdahl, 29, of Lakewood. Engdahl was a parafencer and member of the Denver Fencing Center.

On Feb. 27, the Lakewood Police Department tracked a suspect to a Commerce City residence, where he was arrested.

The suspect vehicle, which had a Colorado license plate of DWBP87, has not been recovered. Police suspect the license plate has been removed.

Police say the vehicle sustained heavy front-end damage and is missing the driver’s side headlight, in addition to having sustained damage to the windshield.

There are no pending charges as of Wednesday.

If anyone has any information about the vehicle, they are asked to call the Lakewood Police Department at 303-980-7300 and to ask for Detective Moffat.
