Commercial fishermen seek help from government amid La. crawfish crisis

LOUISIANA (KLFY) — The recent drought has taken a huge negative impact on this year’s crawfish season. After Governor Jeff Landry called for critical aid on farm-raised crawfish, commercial crawfishermen want help as well. Henderson Mayor Sherbin Collette has fished the water of the Atchafalaya Basin for his entire life. He said he wants the representation to be fair for everyone.

“Let me tell you, some deep water, crawfish and commercial fishermen in the basin is not easy. It is not easy at all,” Collette said. “Some of them are just bait and traps, absolutely nothing.”

Luckily, with the help of local politicians, commercial fisherman James Fredieu said work is being done to bring money to the commercial crawfishermen heavily impacted by the drought.

“We are working on a different declaration without parish government at wildlife fisheries to try to get some money, but in a different a different route,” Fredieu said.

Commercial fishing does not fall under the department of agriculture. Their affiliation is under wildlife and fisheries. Fredieu said he hopes the work he and others are doing can make it to the appropriate agencies to help everyone out and bring some money back into their pockets.

“Hopefully they can find the correct avenue for us to, you know, go through,” Fredieu said.
