All commercial flights to Israel from Newark, NYC canceled — except on this airline

All commercial airlines except one have canceled flights to Israel from the New York-New Jersey area amid the attacks and retaliatory strikes in the area of the Gaza Strip.

United, Delta, American and Air Canada canceled at least 20 flights from Saturday through Monday at LaGuardia, JFK and Newark Liberty airports, including connections in other cities to Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, said FlightAware, a flight tracking and data platform.

A United Airlines spokesman said any customer on a canceled flight is eligible for a flight credit or refund. More information is available on its website.

“The safety of our customers and employees is our top priority. We operated two scheduled flights out of Tel Aviv late Saturday and early Sunday and accommodated our customers, crews and employee travelers who were at the airport,” the spokesman said in a statement. “Tel Aviv flights will remain suspended until conditions allow them to resume.”

A spokesperson for Air Canada said it will assist customers who have had to make flight changes to Israel, including providing refunds.

"Given the evolving situation in Israel, Air Canada temporarily cancelled flights to Tel Aviv as of Sun, Oct. 8. We are monitoring this dynamic situation closely and we will adjust these plans as required. Air Canada will resume operations to Tel Aviv as soon as the situation stabilizes," the spokesperson said in an email.

Delta announced it will cancel all flights to Israel for the rest of October, according to media reports.

El Al, the national airline of Israel, is the only carrier with scheduled flights to Israel from New York and New Jersey, though some were delayed. For more than two decades, El Al has equipped its aircraft with defense systems to protect against surface-to-air missiles, among other security measures, making it one of the safest airlines in the world.

El Al is increasing the number of flights to Israel as it transports reservists who are being called up to return as fighting increases, a Reuters report said.
