Commissioner: County recycling has doubled with new single-stream system
Crawford County residents recycled 69 tons of items during the month of January, more than doubling previous collections, according to a county commissioner.
Tim Ley, president of the board of commissioners, said officials from Rumpke Waste and Recycling recently notified the board of the increased amount.
"That's newspaper, cardboard, plastic and cans and bottles — plastic bottles and all that," Ley said. "And that is a huge amount. But more importantly, that 69 tons stayed out of the landfill."
In the past, a good month's collection was typically 30 tons, he said, "so we're talking doubled."
Commissioners would like to see the amount recycled each month continue to increase, Ley said. Rumpke officials pointed out that it's usually harder to get people to recycle in winter, so he's optimistic that will happen.
The increase is being attributed to the new single-stream recycling system the county adopted in December, he said. Previously, residents were required to sort their items; now, it all goes into the same bin.
Ley said he and other commissioners have heard a lot of positive feedback about the change. "It's so much easier," he said.
"We believe it's really working for Crawford County and we hope to increase that number," he said.
One more drop-off site has been added since single-stream recycling began in early December: Four recycling containers have been placed behind Bucyrus City Hall, 500 S. Sandusky Ave., he said.
Also, an additional bin has been added at the Crawford County Fairgrounds, 610 Whetstone St., Bucyrus, so now there are six containers there. "They were filling up fast," Ley said.
Other drop-off sites are at the Quality Inn, 1515 N. Sandusky Ave., Bucyrus; 119 E Mansfield St., New Washington; East Park, 1231 E Walnut St., Galion; Crestline Village Hall, 121 W. Bucyrus St., Crestline; and Lowe-Volk Nature Center, 2401 Ohio 598, Crestline.
