Commissioners award contract to replace LaPlume bridge

Jun. 21—A contractor will replace a long-closed LaPlume Twp. bridge during the next 18 months, the project engineer said Wednesday.

The Lackawanna County commissioners awarded a $1,877,735 contract to replace the Ackerly Creek Bridge to Susquehanna Valley Construction Corp., of New Cumberland.

Built in 1904, according to state Department of Transportation records, the 42-feet long, two-lane arched bridge on College Road closed when it partially collapsed in 2011, county engineer Frank Summa said. The new bridge will be about 70 feet long, Summa said.

He expects replacement to begin this fall and take about a year.
