Commissioners celebrate Poppy Days

May 23—Johnson County Judge Chris Boedeker declared Friday as Poppy Days in Johnson County and Monday as Johnson County Memorial and Remembrance Day in honor of Memorial Day that same day.

Boedeker spoke of the immeasurable benefits America has realized because of veterans as well as the efforts by current military men and women to add their own chapters to the American story.

"They are the best of America," Boedeker said. "It's important that we support our veterans, our troops and their families and our patriotic duty to preserve the legacy of those brave Americans."

Boedeker encouraged residents to wear a red poppy on Poppy and Memorial days as a symbolic tribute to the fallen as well as the sacrifices of current and future veterans.

American Legion Auxilliary Unit 50 member Marty Peters also weighed in on the importance of both days.

"Many of our veterans are gone and not with us anymore," Peters said. "That's the importance of Memorial Day. Because, as long as we remember, they live on."

Peters and Boedeker encouraged all to attend Monday's Memorial Day event, which is 10 a.m. at the Cleburne Cemetery, 405 Watters St.

"The ceremony will take place in the circular drive area in front of the cemetery office building," Peters said. "Lunch will follow at the American Legion Post 50."

In addition to others, Maurice Simpson, a veteran, will speak during the event.
