Commissioners could get final say over Southeast Health board

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Alabama lawmakers have approved a plan that would change the way people who oversee Southeast Health are selected.

Right now, the Houston County Commission picks who serves on the healthcare authority board, but they are only allowed to choose candidates put forward by the board itself.

That process has been criticized.

Now, the Alabama House and Senate have approved a proposed constitutional amendment that would allow the commissioners to appoint whoever they want, regardless of whether the board members nominate that person.

This would also apply to the director of the board.

The plan is on its way to the governor if it goes through it would have to be an amendment to Alabama’s constitution and placed on the ballot.
