KEY ACTION Approved paying Mannik & Smith Group an additional $23,000 for gas monitoring at the county landfill, based on an EPA recommendation.

DISCUSSION  Commissioner James Justice was absent as Commissioners Denny Bittle and Mike Welch talked about the reasons behind the newly needed money.

“On that $23,000, that is additional to our yearly contract with them,” said Bittle. “The EPA has requested some additional monitoring and some well upgrades on that. We didn’t anticipate that at the beginning of the year. We send reports to them all the time and once and awhile they come back with additional requirements.”

“They were going to have to abandon one or two of them and then drill a couple of new (wells),” added Welch. “And they were going to make them deeper just to satisfy the EPA.”

The additional landfill money was among 26 appropriations for eight county departments approved by commissioners.

Commissioners also OK'd just over $39,000 in design service fees for the dog shelter project, and 18 various appropriations for juvenile felony custody for wages, PERS, workers’ compensation and Medicare.

The Sheriff’s Department had $75,000 transferred for anticipated remaining year fuel costs to offset higher gas prices.
